If you want a house based on steamy contemporary romance and daft fluffy carpets, I'd suggest bargain shops ... maybe Poundland if you can stretch to it. Romance magazines I guess could be foraged for at the bottom of paper-bank skips. Steam clean 'em first.

cassity
What would you suggest? I don't think I'd suggest anything you are not comfortable with. If its your thing, ignore and go for it. I'm minimalist so I prefer glass, steel, neutral and rectangles...oh, and lots of natural light.

I'm worried that I will just buy a lot of stuff that doesn't go together!

Don't get advice from these poncey makeover shows like 60 minute makeover and the like. Do your own thing. If it feels right to you, go for it. Hesther
Don't rush in to things - that normally results in mistakes. Get your inspiration from magazines, newspapers, internet (get brochures from b and q - paint manufacturers, interior furnishing shops, etc) and make up a board of your favourite pictures - some might be of a whole room or hallway, some might just be of one object you really like - keep at it - and then after a few weeks, review everything you've got, weed out what doesn't appeal anymore and look for any common themes amongst your pictures - eg colour, textures, light, etc Of course, you could do a virtual 'board' if you prefer. Start from there. I love stuff like this.
