Sheffields ugly buildings

Recommended Posts

Shop at corner of Wolseley Road and Staveley Road. Just a bit of paint and general tidy up on the outside is all that's needed. So why not do it? I would if it was my business.

I'm not so fussed about that one, tbh. It's fairly quaint with it's 1980s-style bubbie-gum machines outside. If I was to be a concerned business owner around there it would be whoever runs "D & V Convenience Store".

Charlton's Bakery. Really don't know why anything in that parade is vacant; what's the story there?

The story is that it now belongs to the grandson of the original owner. He has turned down numerous offers to take it over and turn it into something viable (as you'd expect on that parade which has seen an upsurge in nice units recently). He has refused any offers and apparently says it is "in use." By my reckoning, he's a useless waster who sits upstairs doing nothing while the rest of the community has to suffer from its ugliness. He must be an awfully lazy and irresponsible man. The council should take it over and evict him as it's on a public shopping street.

Where's Charlton's bakery?

It's on Chesterfield where it runs alongside Meersbrook - the first unit in the old tannery building.

Where's Charlton's bakery?

It's sat in this dilapidated state for many years.

In no particular order:

The cheesegrater car park

Hallam uni students union building

The uni Diamond

The uni Music dept building (the one that looks like a black quilted cube)

The cubes on stilts that look out onto Sheaf Street and the bus station

This thing

And this thing

The uni Psychology department (though the trees are doing a good job of screening it, these days).

This collection of horrors

The Manpower Services Commission building at the bottom of The Moor

Nice going, Sheffield university.

So you dont like anything modern then :-( Well thats not the way to progress ...

Wow, you've got me there. I don't like anything modern. Down with modern things! Down with them, I say! And progress too!

You have to remember that most buildings are some form of basic cuboid.

As soon as you start to deviate from that, or decorate it, cost begins to mount up.

We will never be able to afford the kind of embellishments that used to be common on victorian buildings, so what to replace it with?

It might be an idea to start a thread on favourite buildings, and go from there.
