What is a benefits scrounger?

Recommended Posts

Benefits are propping up the economy. If state benefits stopped tomorrow and company subsidies stopped, the uk economy would crumble.

The uk economy itself is based on finance centralised in the city and low paid service jobs.

Many pensioners dont need free travel and winter fuel allowance. At least 1 million richer pensioners shouldnt get that money.

That's strange over the last few winters many pensioners have been found dead in their homes often dying in cold homes as many were afraid of getting a big bill. As for millionaire pensioners not seen many about Sheffield if they are entitled to claim a Fuel Allowance they should get it after all they paid into the system like everyone else. As for economy based around benefits ,what about pre Welfare State Britain economy then how did that survive then?

pre welfare state, people didnt survive like they do now and wealthy land owners and industrial owners basically worked people to death.

We dont want to go back to that.

I agree. It's time to take a look at pensioner entitlements, the biggest part of the welfare budget by a long way.

If you took away in-work benefits (tax credits, housing benefits) overnight our economy would descend into chaos. In-work benefits underpin everything. Practically every low paid job at every workplace is subsidised.

Costs us £60bn a year and the bill is growing all the time.

In work benefits subsidize life style choice and part time work, not low hourly rates of pay, some people on minimum wage don't qualify for in work benefits, whilst some people on £20 an hour do qualify for in work benefits.

Its the number of hours you work, the number of kids you have and your hourly rate of pay that determines what you receive, an high hourly rate doesn't mean you won't qualify and a low hourly rate doesn't mean you will qualify.

A benefits scrounger is someone that can work or work more hours but chooses not to and instead of working they claims benefits.

The creation of a welfare state was a good thing.

It was never created to subsidise private businesses and individuals.

Or a life time on the dole for that matter.

Would it not make more sense in lowing VAT and prices across the board, so people don't need so much money to live , the knock on effect no need for in work benefits , cheaper housing ,bills ,food ( instead of building yet more houses put aside land for food production) or is that too simple ?

But if they paid into the system they should be entitled to free travel and other benefits like everyone else they have already paid for it though their working lives?

I would imagine in London, most of the claims are to do with subsidising rents.

The London housing market is way out of kilter with the rest of the country, and that's to do with the super rich pushing up land values.

London truly is the land of the haves and have-nots. We don't want that spreading to the rest of the country.

So what? Why are they immune to austerity while people like me and other young people bare the brunt?

I pay higher tax rate, nobody gives me 200 quid for Christmas and a free travel card. And I don't need one either.

Pensioners should be better off in general, if they have paid off their mortgage etc. They should have disposable income.

If they don't, well fine, they need assistance.

It's happening everywhere. Rents and housing is too high and not in line with true market values.

But yes, it is subsidising private housing!
