Daven
I can a name few like the other Burton building down Attercliffe but none had the striking appearance of Burton building on Angel Street. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=burton+building+angel+street+sheffield+picture&tbm=isch&imgil=0fBJeLW33JDwrM%253A%253Bx6zCMVaiDn5cQM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.sheffieldhistory.co.uk%25252Fforums%25252Findex.php%25253F%25252Ftopic%25252F12905-pictures-of-sheffield%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=0fBJeLW33JDwrM%253A%252Cx6zCMVaiDn5cQM%252C_&biw=1440&bih=759&usg=__3WzuWGwQFar0nIe8ckRC7jLq4Ec%3D&ved=0CDcQyjdqFQoTCN26z4nP2scCFcFcGgodpLkMFw&ei=vBvoVd3sCcG5aaTzsrgB#imgrc=0fBJeLW33JDwrM%3A&usg=__3WzuWGwQFar0nIe8ckRC7jLq4Ec%3D Does anyone know why it was demolished ? Was it bomb damaged during WW2 ? The Burton building was bombed in 1940 and left as burnt out shell. After the war the council was wanting to keep the building but the costs involved plus rationing of materials ended any hope of saving it. The building was demolished in c 1963. PeterR
Grand Hotel, Iv recently seen some inside photos of the main staircase it was stunning. What were they thinking destroying this fine building and been replaced by that eyesore, the building would have improved the street scene no end? I was a bread van driver for Bells Bread for a short while in 1964/5 and used to deliver around the back off Orchard Lane. Never did see inside the hotel The more modern extension buildings facing onto Barkers Pool weren't quite as impressive though. That's an impressive staircase. Does anybody know if it had an elevator (lift) One of those old iron and steel cages, maybe?
brian1941
The one building i liked was Sutherland Rd Baths just off Petre St, most off my friends and family used it very often and we would travel from Owler Lane School for a Swimming Lesson. Not sure the year it was knocked down but it was a good old building. Anyone got a picture.
TORONTONY
Barclays Bank at the top of Commercial St. I went for a job interview 48 years ago and never received a reply. I'd like to call in to see if they have decided yet. Must apologise for my post#29, seems I got mixed up. I was thinking you meant the Haymarket corner of Commercial Street( Yorkshire Bank), when you meant the Fitzalan Square corner. I also got my bearings wrong in relation to the Kings Arms as it was the second building on that side of Commercial Street, below Barclays, although the two may have been attached, hence my mistake. PeterR
The former John Banner's store on Attercliffe Road and the building on the corner of Attercliffe and Staniforth Road are other examples of Art Deco architecture, similar to the blitzed Burton's shop. Many Sheffield cinemas were also built in that period. Remember the Regent, re-named the Gaumont, in Barker's Pool? echo ---------- Post added 04-09-2015 at 12:40 ---------- Ahhh, John Banners. I took a Saturday Job there in 1960/1. Met my dear late first wife there. Lots of lovely memories. A lot different inside then. More like 'Are you being served ?' times. Certainly hope this building isn't demolished in my lifetime. This picture taken when I was 4/5. Could well be inside the building (far left of pic) with my Mother shopping. We would have either walked or taken the number 5 bus from Grimesthorpe http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s13155&pos=8&action=zoom&id=16039 Edited September 4, 2015 by PeterR
