El Cid
I dont think anyone will disagree with the title of the thread, but why is this the case? Do they have a different press? I have family that moved north, and they said it was more family friendly up there. Is immigration an issue, maybe there is more cheap labour in the South? Could England could back more to the left? ---------- Post added 02-09-2015 at 13:44 ---------- The only British city to make it into the top 30 was Edinburgh. http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/galway-irish-city-voted-the-friendliest-in-the-world-10482484.html
tinfoilhat
Used to be a lot of heavy industry up there, so that might be a reason.

I was just checking google maps. It's not only more to the left, it's also quite a bit further up. Then there's Ireland of course. They're even further to the left. El Cid
This survey is horse s**t. I made the thread above Scotlands politics being more socialist, and then I saw a news item about friendly cities. Is Sheffield classed as being in the 'North'? I was interested in this & I came across this article in the Telegraph about how social attitudes compare between the 2 countries: And it seems that in certain respects England is more left wing. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/scotland/11754256/Scots-are-more-Right-wing-than-the-English.html

Berberis
Been to edinburgh many times...i can say uneqivocly sheffield is loads friendlier. If you're English it can be unfriendly. Out of the tourist season that is.
TJC1
If you're English it can be unfriendly. Out of the tourist season that is. There's a load of posh Scots living there, went to the festival and didn't find friendly at all. ... Been other times and it's ok. They get over run with tourists to be fair... Sheffield is much more friendly judging by those several visits. Sheff would probably be less friendly if loads of tourists swamped facilities that locals use...
