It hits home when photo's like this are shown, however the answer is not to just let imigrants/refugees into the country and swamp our services and create more tension on top of what is already there. Who is going to pay for it all, all the food, clothing, language classes, schooling, medical care etc, etc...

The root cause needs to be fixed here, and that's where I don't mind seeing my money going. The majority seem to be coming from Syria so quite clearly that country has some massive issues, now I don't pretend to know a great deal about the whole situation but surely when a country is in such dire straits then it needs a proper fix.

The EU/UN should put together a massive task force, take over the country and run it in a way that works and lets the migrants stay and prosper. There has to be a point where we say enough is enough and get firmly stuck in for the good of humanity...

The Russians are doing their bit - assad has taken delivery of some shiney new armoured personnel carriers according to reports on the bbc.

It probably wouldn't have done. We do need to do more to help genuine refugees but we need to do something to stop people becoming refugees in first place.

How we going to solve third world corruption? Governments and factions killing its own people?

genuine question.

If we could make a dent in that, it would have happened by now Surely.

Europe could organise boats. 500 people per day. Off the coast of libya. Stop some of the criminals.

500 people died when a boat capsized the other day...these would be 'safe boats'. Run by the military.

At calais, we could setup checkpoints where 100 are processed per day.

if we cant control, least we can contain.

You're talking about African migrants here, not Syrian/Afghan refugees. Why would Europe pay to illegally transport Nigerian and Eritrean migrants to the country of their choice?

The Uk was talking about syrian air strikes quite recently....doesnt seem like a good overall strategy if we want to stop migration.

I agree with a EU/UN task force. Still a massive job...these migrants are from all over north africa.

It is the inevitable consequence of sending out the word that if you can reach Europe you'll be allowed to stay. European politicians have effectively invited migrants to risk death to ease their own conscience and maintain their own power. They will blame the people traffickers but it is their doing.

The rise of the nationalist and far right parties will also be their fault. The end of a tolerant Europe will be their fault. The racism and violence against migrants will be their fault.

We need a strategy that will deliver the best outcome in this world. There is no point pretending the response of people to the arrival of millions of migrants will be different. The signs are there and mustn't be ignored. Look at polls that gauge public opinion and what is the direction of opinion? Look at how nationalist and far right parties are fairing... what's the direction of travel? What is the number 1 issue in the Uk? How are Muslims currently perceived in Europe and are we seeing greater unity and trust or the opposite? How will creaking services, hit by recession, cope with a further increase in users without more money, how will people react to their quality of life deteriorating further and who'll be blamed?

We ignore the reality at our peril. We can't fix the world. We must say no to migrants and stop the exodus.

Another well thought out post.

Hopefully David Cameron will stick to his guns.

Im talking about the strips of water, between libya and europe...they are coming anyway. What we are doing is preventing deaths. Maybe have a max 500 Per day.

With a unilateral effort across europe.

france not passing the buck, uk doing more...

France should be passing the buck, it's Britain's fault. The thousands of migrants camped in Calais trying to get in to the UK aren't Syrian refugees, they're African migrants responding to Britain's advertisement of itself as an immigration holiday camp over the last few decades. These people aren't escaping war or persecution, they just have this idea that Britain is some sort of paradise.

There was a BBC interview in Calais a few weeks back. They were talking to the migrants, some of which thought that they would be enrolled in Cambridge University as soon as they arrived in Britain and that the streets were paved with gold.

But how will that stop people running from ISIS? We could be picking up dead kids from Mediterranean beaches for a decade regardless of how many boats you provide. It won't be enough.

not just ISIS. I dont think we Know how huge a task this is. We are talking many countries with complex problems.
