Banning protests in South Yorkshire?

What I was suggesting was a way to keep the protest marches but not cost the taxpayers 4 x Million pounds. I was n't suggesting groups be able to afford to protest, but if they want to use marching as a marketing tool, there is a cost that should not be loaded onto the taxpayer.

When anything needs large numbers of police there is an associated cost (home football games at S6 or Bramall Lane) and the organisers have to contribute. Agree marchers should not be turned down but may need dates/routes changed for safety and available police resources etc.

Counter demos same day with close timing is something that does need tight control.

This is an issue that should have public input, and Councils should as formally asking for that as well as from the Police and local government

I saw the same clip and my understanding was the youths were fighting the EDL and the police was just stuck in the middle.
my understanding gleaned from all the comments underneath the clip on the SYP page, was the the British First (not EDL) march had finished and had been escorted away.

The further trouble on the clip was caused when some pakistani youth passed the pub where there'd been trouble earlier in the week with a pakistani chasing one of the bar staff with a knife. Trouble flared and escalated. As you saw, a large number appeared from nowhere and started throwing bins and missiles. Although later it transpired that they were from the UAF/Muslim Youth protest against the British First march.

Three of the pub customers were arrested, but none of the large crowd, so it looks like SYP still haven't stopped discriminating? Now they're asking for info so they can 'investigate further'. You couldn't make it up :)

If £4 million pounds is the cost of democracy I say that's quite cheap and would gladly pay double.
