Daven
No obligation legally maybe but morally I think you should. I'm not a dog lover really but would be mortified if I injured a dog and would do what I could to help it. spooferman
99% down to the owner allowing the dog to stray, just the same as cat owners! but yes I would have stopped see if the poor thing could be saved!
lindylou53
Also possible that they didn't realise they had run it over, one of our drivers did the very same a few months back and claimed he never even saw a dog. Shouldn't be driving then - what if it had been a child that he 'didn't realise' he had knocked over?

ANGELFIRE1
As a dog person with two of my own, this incident is the owners fault for allowing his animal to gain access to a road, harsh, yes, but true nevertheless. As for stopping to report the collision, I don't think the driver is under any legal obligation to report such instances. Should he/she have stopped, not all people are animal lovers as many of us are, so be it on their conscience for driving away. Would I have stopped, definitely, to offer comfort to the dog at least, and to dispatch it if the poor creature was like mince. Angel1.
Cyclone
It would make sense to stop at the very least to check your vehicle for damage... Morally it would be right to stop and do what you can for the dog. Legally you have to report it within 24hrs, which I guess means you do not need to stop. Since the OP has reported it to the police, they will obviously know whether the driver did or didn't report it within 24hrs and can act accordingly. Timeh
I hope the son of a bitch gets caught Gets caught? For what? For all we know the driver didnt even know until they got home and then could have immediately gone and retraced their steps to find out where it happened or even rung the police? Jeez, some people on here are so judgemental.
