PeteMorris
Only 4p is going to charity,1p is going to the treasury, you do not have to pay if they contain meat, fish or veg,how stupid is this idea lol Or promotional literature....
CarolW
This was introduced in Wales about 4 years ago - and as far as I can see, the bags are still the same flimsy ones as before!!! Some companies donate the 5p to charity, some don't... There does seem to be a lot less plastic bag waste on the streets though... My main problem is that I have to try to remember to take bags with me when I go shopping!!!! And when I come up to Sheffield and am asked if I want a bag, I'm so used to it, I automatically say "No" now - even if I need one!!! I did notice that when I did a grocery shop online, even though I checked the "No bags" option, some things still arrived in plastic bags and I wasn't charged for them at all.. As mentioned elsewhere that would make for a an interesting Saturday night! ---------- Post added 05-10-2015 at 14:41 ---------- This was introduced in Wales about 4 years ago - and as far as I can see, the bags are still the same flimsy ones as before!!! So in Wales the upside is - there is a lot less plastic waste on the streets. On the downside - you have to try to remember to take your own bags if you want to avoid paying the 5p per bag charge. This doesn't seem too bad.

But prescription medication isn't dispensed in plastic bags anyway, surely? They're in paper bags?

InigoMontoya
Apparently, when this was introduced in Ireland, it was 27p per bag. (or 27¢?) And that has made quite a spectacular difference to people "remembering to take their own bags!)
PeteMorris
I suppose at the end of the day, as smaller companies (less than 250 employees) are exempt, it encourages 'me' to go to small local independent retailers, who will be happy to provide bags free of charge. It pays to shop local anyway, which I try to do where possible anyway.
neilwhit
So now axe prices are gonna go sky high, perhaps they should make plastic ones.
top4718
The money will be donated to charities, so the supermarkets aren't making money from the idea. I assume the people who administer/manage how the charity money is donated will be working free of charge then?
JFKvsNixon
I assume the people who administer/manage how the charity money is donated will be working free of charge then? Fair enough, I stand corrected. It doesn't change that I believe that anything that stops so many plastic bags littering the streets, whilst generating a bigger income for charities is a good idea.
