Obelix
that's because it has an airport. No it's more like the IRA blew it up. Manchester was a hole before that event. Now I'm not suggesting that we should blow up Sheffield but a clean sweep and start again does have a certain appeal.
truman
Maybe Manchester City Centres's Arndale centre, which according to wikipedia is bigger than Meadowhall, has helped to keep on bringing people into their city centre? If it can sustain Trafford and The Arndale then they are doing something right there...
Detetcive
I see absolutely no point in having a small/med airport which only flies to a handful of places it's unlikely I'll be going to. We are well served with several medium sized airports, a large airport (Manc) just over an hour away, and pretty good links to Heathrow. Within 2 hrs drive (or public transport) you can get to Manchester, Liverpool, East Midlands, Doncaster, Leeds, Birmingham. That'll do me. Totally agree. You can get to Manchester airport quicker from here than from some parts of Manchester and EM is an hour away, road works permitting!! We have the access to these airports without the pain of being on a flightpath.
AmourDesign
I think also that not having a football team in the premier league for so long has probably had an affect on the city. The premier league would bring world recognition and also a lot of other money to the city.
Detetcive
Sheffield is more of a town with huge suburbs than a conventional city. Meadowhall has halted the natural expansion of the city centre. Where cities like Leeds and Manchester has seen rapid development over the last 10-15 years. Meadowhall has been great for South Yorkshire but a lead weight to Sheffield. To the centre maybe, but lots of Sheffield's suburbs are thriving. JFKvsNixon
If it can sustain Trafford and The Arndale then they are doing something right there... Actually, I think that Obelix has hit the nail on the head. Didn't the insurance companies pay out around £1 billion to rebuild Manchester's city centre and the Arndale Centre after the IRA attacked them? Daven
No it's more like the IRA blew it up. Manchester was a hole before that event. Now I'm not suggesting that we should blow up Sheffield but a clean sweep and start again does have a certain appeal. The Luftwaffe did that in 1940 and destroyed many beautiful buildings. Sadly, the buildings that replaced them are the very ones that could do with being destroyed today !
kidley
Sheffield, the largest city in Europe...without its own airport or any electric train services. Is this good, bad, or ugly? I dont know if you are having a dig at Sheffield or not but, Robin Hood airport is classed as Sheffield's airport, if you would want an world class international Sheffield airport where would you put it? It certainly would not be in Sheffield?
