America's shame. Again.

Isnt this rather simplistic?

He didnt even say ban.

I'm afraid penny does caution on the simplistic side..in all matters. Whenever guns and the US is mentioned they scream the 1st and 2nd as well as 'it's non of our business', where in reality it doesn't have to be to have an opinion.

A three year old Chicago boy accidentally shot in the head and killed by his six year old brother.

Mind numbingly awful is the research by the Washington Post showing that 43 people have been shot by kids younger than three - this year alone, so far.

More here from the Indy - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/toddler-dies-after-accidentally-being-shot-in-head-by-six-year-old-brother-a6698711.html

The more people shout about this and shame America publicly, the more likely it is that they'll eventually take their heads out of their backsides and act.

not the fault of gun laws just stupid people who leave guns in the way of a child, just like druggies whose mothers leave the needles lying about, the paracetamol addict that leaves pills all over, the alcoholic single mum that leaves her special brew within reach of her toddler...can you see????

Except if you regulated so there were fewer legally available guns , then there would be fewer incidences of guns lying around+ irresponsible people= fewer incidents. All things being equal.

Why doesnt it happen in this country at the same rates? Surely people in both countries are equally stupid?

Also the consequences of a gun wound will result in a higher incidence of fatalities.

Did making drugs illegal mean there were few needles, wraps of cocaine, crack pipes etc lying around and fewer irresponsible people? Would it be any less fatal if a child was shot with an illegal gun rather than a legal one?

I don't understand how people think the way they do on this issue. Do you really think that if the US had exactly the same laws on guns as the UK, that their levels of gun crime would immediately fall to UK levels? It's a completely different country with a completely different culture.

If you're going to support gun ownership then best not compare guns to heroin.

Gun laws by the way allow guns to circulate in society making it inevitable that some will fall into the hands of the wrong people.

Chicago has gun laws (I linked them earlier) and it also has a huge murder rate. I suspect the father-of-the-year nominee had his gun in the fridge waiting for the armed thugs who were about to kick his door in (in his mind anyway).

What a sad way to live.

You always jump from one argument to another and they never seem connected.

1. The OP didnt talk about banning. If you had fewer guns in circulation then there would be fewer incidents of gun + upset person= shooting. Why? Because large groups of people respect the law and want to remain within it. Clearly its worked here and in many other developed nations.

2. Your point about injury not recognising the legality of the weapon is pointless. If there are fewer weapons, there will be fewer incidents all things being equal.

3. Would gun incidents drop if their level of gun ownership did? Yes although it would take some adjusting. As you say its a different country and they have a different attitude to guns. there are also nearly as many guns as people, so its almost impossible to think they will get to a stage where they choos to give them up. That doesnt stop the possibility that in certain states which decide they want more gun control, that they can reduce gun incidents over time if they enacted the right legislation. They would need a level of public support to do that.

Anyway you carry on Happ hazard.

The OP has already admitted owning a gun albeit an air gun does it make him a hypocrite.

Not really because he hasnt said he wants to ban them just hinted at more regulation over who has them and they are responsible people. I cnat really say becayse he cna speak for himself and its not clear from his post. An air gun isnt in the same level of lethality as an assault rifle or some of the powerful handguns.

Their country and they can do what they like. If they dont ant the events to happen there are 2 elements the people and the guns.
