Thank you Mr Joubert!

Insofar as the Australia v Scotland game went on Sunday, World Rugby's final decision was lacking one observation; yes, they may have covered all angles when considering Jon Welsh being played onside by Nick Phipps, but did they pay any attention to the fact that Welsh might have moved forward at the time John Hardie conceded the knock-on? Law 11.1(a):

A player who is in an offside position is liable to sanction only if the

player does one of three things:

Interferes with play or,

Moves forward, towards the ball or

Fails to comply with the 10-Metre Law (Law 11.4)

The offside infringement is the more serious of the two, and so awarding Australia a penalty in this case would be right; maybe after the penalty there could still be an advantage playable in Australia's favour for the knock-on.

Mr Joubert, you may well be right after all!
