Whatsername
Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm currently claiming ESA and have been placed in the support group. I was thinking about going back into studying, maybe doing a part time uni course. Does anyone know if doing so would affect my claim, or what I am allowed (so to say) to do whilst claiming? and would I be able to apply for a student loan to fund the course?:help::help: Thank you! 999tigger
Hi Am not up to speed on ESA, but theres a helpline and fact sheet here. It appears you can study part time, but ring and check http://www.disabilityrightsuk.org/employment-and-support-allowance-overview http://www.disabilityrightsuk.org/funding-higher-education-disabled-students-201415 http://www.disabilityrightsuk.org/how-we-can-help/helplines/disabled-students-helpline Can I study and claim ESA? If you get contribution-based ESA, you can study part-time or full-time without affecting your claim. Most full-time students can’t get income-related ESA, but you can if you’re getting DLA or PIPs. If you study part-time it shouldn’t affect your claim for income-related ESA (although be aware that being able to study part-time may show you can do a certain amount of work). For more advice on studying and claiming ESA, contact the Disabled Students Helpline on 0800 328 5050 (open Tuesdays 11.30am–1.30pm, and Thursdays 1.30pm–3.30pm). As you are in the support group, then you dont have to look for work, so it shouldnt affect your claim. Any of the numbers will give you better advice. The disabled team for Hallam https://www.shu.ac.uk/services/sls/support/disability/meet-the-team.html The one for the Uni https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/disability/setting-up-support/prospective-students-how-do-i-set-up-my-support 0114 222 1303 or email disability.info@sheffield.ac.uk If they cnat answer your questions direct they will be able to point you in the right direction. You need to be wary of this Note that starting a course may trigger DWP to ask you to undergo a reassessment, so be careful. Am sure the helplines cna set you straight with all you need. It also looks as though you can apply for a student loan but it might eb counted as income which could affect your ESA. no idea if that would apply to course fees. Hope you sort it out
