El Cid
That's basically what I said, though I worded it as not wanting their water-tight 'overtime' rates being tampered with'. I see it has the junior doctors think that they will be made(they do not do it for the money, but because they are needed) to work longer hours; the monetary disincentive is being taken away when hospitals allow junior doctors to work excessive hours. JFKvsNixon
That's basically what I said, though I worded it as 'not wanting their water-tight 'overtime' rates being tampered with' It's not their overtime rates that they're striking over, it's their standard unsocial rates that are being taken away, so because they're expected to work lots of unsocial hours this ends being a major pay cut. Also currently, if the junior doctors work excessive hours the hospital gets fined due to the risk to patient safety, this safeguard is also being removed. runningman1
I am a bit puzzled as to how you would make lifes losers pay. If they don't pay they die. Social cleansing. I'd say a decent rate of pay is a quater of what a premiership footballer gets Quick maths shows that would cost almost £2000 per person per annum to give doctors 600k a year. That is just doctors, so we would need to pay nurses, anethatists, ultra sound people, midwifes, paramedics, consultants, surgeons, ward sisters, mental health specialists and so many more. Do these get a similar rate of pay too? Why would you says something as stupid as one of the wolds biggest employers should pay it's staff a quarter of what a premier league footballer earns per year, and it should all be funded by the British taxpayer. Cyclone
Not to be picky, but anaesthetists, consultants, surgeons and so on are all doctors. Consultants of course are not junior doctors, but they previously were.

runningman1
And ward Sisters are nurses - not junior but they previously were. No they aren't. You have to be a nurse before you can become a ward sister, but the contract and job roles differ. The same answer to the post above uours
Cyclone
Sister is still a nursing position. But nobody was listing nursing jobs as separate to nursing.
Eric Arthur
It's not their overtime rates that they're striking over Of course it is. Also currently, if the junior doctors work excessive hours the hospital gets fined due to the risk to patient safety, this safeguard is also being removed. As is the maximum number of hours that they are allowed to work, which means they work fewer hours and get paid for the hours that they work, not the hours that they used to work. It is a pay dispute. They want a pay rise. ---------- Post added 17-01-2016 at 12:23 ---------- Perhaps you're confusing Junior Dr with GP? Some junior doctors are GP's, in fact every junior doctor does GP practice at some point. Lots of them went on strike. I thought that you would have known a simple fact like that. Cyclone
By definition a junior doctor is not a GP. A GP is fully qualified. And yes, I know that junior doctors work across the whole range of services as part of their training. They don't want a pay rise, they haven't asked, proposed or demanded a pay rise.
