Junior Doctors row: 98% vote to strike

Recommended Posts

But that is already in place, and has always been in place. Junior doctors are always backed by senior staff who are available all the time

You missed the 'affordable' bit. Which is the point of the new contract, behind all the smoke and mirrors and arguments; the Government feels the NHS cannot continue with the current weekend/evening/night working salary enhancements in the current economic climate. Who knows, they could be right.

So that should apply to all graduates who choose to emigrate then. Why pick on the medical profession? Your suggestion seems highly vindictive and retributive. And dangerously stupid.

No, because very few graduates cost the tax payer over half a million pounds to educate. Most pay themselves. Be careful when you bandy the word stupid about or you could have egg on your face, you big disgrace.

Some kind of payback arrangement seems in order then, where they repay the money invested by the UK government and taxpayers in their doctor training.

Fair's fair.

Maybe. However we filch trained doctors and nurses from all over the world.

As they keep reminding us, the NHS couldn't function without immigrants.

What about putting something in place so that health tourists can pay their fees into the system? The E111 card no longer entitles the British to totally free health care in other countries, and I know that many charge the full whack. Only Britain it seems still give it away to foreigners.

Maybe that would help with NHS funding.

The choice that Governments take, is to employ cheaper and lesser trained people from over-seas, and employ them in our NHS.

Our well trained doctors and nurses are welcomed abroad, because they are highly trained.

I wonder how this figure has actually been calculated.

It's not the cost of the university bit of the education, so what is it?

So if the countries they came from imposed a policy like you're suggesting, we'd find that we couldn't hire them, since it would be ruinously expensive for them to leave the country where they trained.

They tried but the BMA rejected it.

You make a very good point.

All the more reason to give doctors trained here a good reason to stay by reclaiming their training costs if they don't. That money can go back into patient care here instead of somewhere else.

Just Googled that and can't find anything. Do you have a link? I can find some info where Doctors said they weren't in favour of the solution proposed by the government but had no specific issue with the concept. Their argument was that UK hospitals are not equipped to make any payments or billing at any point and the costs involved with setting this up would wipe out any costs recovered from non-EU visitors.

This has NEVER been put to a vote or anything other than a suggestion, so you've just done what should become known as a 'Jeremy Hunt', where you twist facts to make the doctors and BMA look bad. How surprising.

BMA rejects plans to charge migrants for NHS care.

And the link to where the government actually asked them in 2015 which is when Jeremy Hunt started to propose it? This article is from 2013.

Add to this as we've just seen the government can enforce anything they want.

Have ANY of the complaints raised by the doctors been resolved yet so this can be taken forward? Or have the government just ignored all of the valid concerns for 2 years and then rolled out the exact same attempt at policy change having ignored the viewpoints of the people who will actually have to find a way to charge when we have NO charging mechanism in place.

Apart from that, it's a great idea. Personally I'd prefer to have my doctors healing people and the politicians can work out the money side
