reini
International student looking for a Retired Professional to practice conversation skills. Hi there = ) ! I am a mature international PhD student and I'm keen on practice conversation skill with some English person who has time (which usually could be Retired Professionals), of course I would dedicate you some of my time and hear you as well and maybe we could do some activities like cooking or baking for instance. At the moment I am struggling to communicate effectively with my colleagues at the office, which is why I am trying to improve. I hope there is someone who could benefit by having conversations with me as well. kind regards!
Bludragonfly
Hello and welcome to Sheffield and the Sheffield Forum Have you considered joining any of the University interest groups such as debating societies? Another option is to look at volunteering as a way to meet people - you can search for opportunities at https://do-it.org/opportunities/search What is your PhD in? Could you find any groups in your specialist area where you could meet people

Amber2Green
Hi Reini If you are at Sheffield Uni have you have the ELTC activities and the One World Cafe opportunities Voluntary activities as Bludragonfly suggested are also useful It's getting towards the time of year when academic departments often become quite sociable with staff get-togethers/parties so try to maximise these opportunities and be open with people in terms of you wanting to practice your speaking skills. Also if there are specific groups of people within your department who you need to communicate with regularly take this 'festive' time of year to suggest taking a tea or coffee break - offer them a biscuit or some cake and you may be able to extend the conversation time.
