Turko-Russian powder-keg

Recommended Posts

Both sides are claiming different flight plans, have you seen the layout of the land and of the particular boarder where the incident occurred??

The Turkish statements are contradictory anyway, on the one hand they are 'defending their airspace' while at the same time they have acknowledged they Russian jets were targeting rebels in Syria.

They shot down someone they knew and have admitted was posing no threat to them??

The strip of land (by the looks of it) no bigger then the tip of land end...At best, it's gross overreaction by the Turks.

Maybe the Turks reactions were not based upon this one action by Russia? Turkey said that they've warned Russia many times about encroaching upon their territory, to the point that they told Russia that they'd defend their territory by force.

The Turks seem to be the aggressors in that part of Syria where the Russian plane came down .Nato seems to pussy foot around them as proved by their invasion and illegal occupation of northern Cyprus.

its quite funny that! Turkey warning Russia? is that because they are in NATO and about to be welcomed into Europe, the EU may think again now? Turkey need to decide which side of the fence they are on before Russia really start to spank some backsides. it has to be one of the Stupidest reactions against a tiny infringement, dont poke the Bear:roll:

Well no, any country's first actions should be to warn another country if they kept on violating their countries borders.

You either dont understand or are confused.

They can shoot down someone who is in their airspace because they shouldnt be there and that makes all the difference although you cant see it. It makes the difference that all the nato allies and the UN will be looking at.

The statements don't have to be contradictory and it can be both. It doesnt matter whether the Russians were no threat, because the right to defend your territory is absolute, especially if you have given them previious warnings and incursions had happened before. The key fact is where the Russian plane was when the Turks opened fire. In or out.

On a practical level, then you have to look at the wisdom of having shot the planes down over such a brief incursion and they seemed to have been ready to protect their own airspace absolutely. The Su24s were attacking rebels who Turkey supports, so a lot of this is political.

Overreaction maybe, but they are still within their rights to defend their own airspace.

i agree normally but in this delicate situation and considering what is going on in the area it wasnt the smartest reaction was it? especially as Turkey knew they were not under threat..........yet!!!!:o i cant see Putin letting them have a free one can you?

No.

Its standard practice that you would warn someone if they inbade your airspace and are somewhere you dont wnat them to be. The UK warns Russian bombers several times a week that they are nearing UK air space.

Its got nothing to do with being in Nato.

It looks like Turkkey already understands which side of the fence it is on and if it shot at the plane whislt it was on Turkish airspace , then its entitled to do so. Whether it was wise is another matter.

Turkey as also being bombing some of the Kurdish fighters in Syria and as I assume that Russia is controlling Syrian air space they could have the Syrians forbid Turkish planes in Syrian air space, I think Russia can retaliate and upset Turkey a lot more by not retaliating directly at Turkey itself

Given the ridiculously tiny area the incursion allegedly happened in, and the speed the jet will be travelling I think it's quite unlikely it all happened inside Turkish Airpsace, I very much doubt there was even sufficient time to lock onto the Russian plane.

17 seconds is the time that has been talked about, not enough time for it to all go down.

17 seconds is barely enough time to confirm the plane has crossed from Syria to Turkey, because the fighter pilot surely wouldn't have known that it'd have to have been the radar operator.
