Oldham West and Royston by-election. Corbyn's big test.

Recommended Posts

A Labour party led by Fred West and a candidate of Jack the Ripper with a manifesto of "murder everyone" would clean up in Oldham West.

No sleight intended on Corbyn btw. Just telling it how it is. Some people just really don't understand just how set in its ways the electorate is in certain places.

i've just watched old nigel whining on bbc1 about this. he really didn't come over very well.

ukip may have tried to turn this into a referendum on mr corbyn but it's not at all clear that the voters of oldham wanted it to be.

he also seems to have overlooked that while the mp's might not be struck with mr corbyn, he is rather popular within the party at large and the labour candidate does seem to be a quite well known and popular local figure and that always helps.

he's also forgotten that ukip's message is focussed solely on one particular community, and to many of those their message is unpleasant, and comes across to other communities as very hostile so perhaps it's not surprising that they didn't do well.

Congratulations to 35 year old local lad Jim McMahon. He seems a genuine guy, who has the welfare of the people of Oldham at heart, which is as it should be.

Yep agreed. Totally how it should be and something I hope Labour returns more to as MPs retire, rather than putting new faces in safe seats.

The very best thing about this result is Farage's whingy whining after the fact.

If he has evidence of electoral fraud, he should speak to the police. As it is, accusing the Asian community in Oldham of postal vote rigging reveals exactly who he is and what he stands for. It also explains why UKIP are finding it so very difficult to find any traction in UK politics.

So UKIP' have peaked. So what. That shouldn't be a surprise.

Where Labour have to take votes is from the Tories, not anyone else, and that is where they have to get traction. And that won't happen with Corbyn as leader in marginal seats. The big test is in May. The main opposition party should expect to make a bit of headway early and mid-way through a parliament. And if Labour don't, and instead go backwards that will have Corbyn on the rack. Labour exceeded expectations in this by-election, although nobody credible expected them to lose. It is UKIP', not the Tories, who have egg on their face.

Invited commentator on Sky yesterday was saying Labour was losing voters hand over fist because of Corbyn.

Today, they of course are saying this victory has nothing to do with Corbyn.:hihi::hihi::hihi:

The Labour leader's strong stance on military intervention may have helped secure his victory in Oldham West and Royton

Looks like the Righties are in a bit of a flap this morning, they can't seem to be able to make their minds up and are lashing out at anything to cover their tracks.:D
