Most modern vehicles will easily cover that milage providing they have been looked after especially diesels, give it a good service and change the cambelt.you will probly have to change things like brake pads and clutches at sometime in the near future

Depends on the car and more particularly the engine. A lot of modern engines can easily do two to three hundred thousand but they reach a point where maintenance becomes more expensive as the aprts that need replacing according to schedule become more expensive. For example Diesel Particular Filters, cambelts, waterpumps and so on.

However, a well kept car with more than 100K that has a full service history and of which you know what the maintenance coming up will cost, can be a bargain. My brother bought a Volvo s40 (2000), 2 litre petrol engine in 2006 for 4000 euros with 190K (kilometres) on the clock and still drives it, it now has over 400K on the clock and he's never had it fail on him.

It is well known that in Sweden people drive their cars for far longer than in most European countries, in conditions harsher than most European countries, but because they maintain them well it is no issue at all.

Look at the diesel cars that private hire taxi drivers use ... Skoda, Toyota, Vauxhall, Kia, Hyundai. Many of these vehicles are well in excess of 200-250k. From personal experience, I'd keep away from anything French.

Is a car with over 100,000 miles for around 1000+ worth getting, are you just taking on other peoples problems, does how many owners it has had, have any bearing on the above, etc?

Why would you want to?

Modern cars don't suffer from the rust problems that they did 20 or 30 years ago. With over 2 million cars sold every year, 2 million end up going to the scrap yard. Many of those without massive mileage. Why buy a worn out motor with worn out suspension, bearings, gearbox and engine, when a lower mileage one can be had for the same price. Just so long as it is lower miles!
