Remembering Pearl Harbour 7th December 1941.

Q (genuine): what on earth did Japan give, at the time, as a reason for such a crass and wicked action?

They were a fascistic expansionist power who wanted to rule the whole of the Pacific basin, from Australia to the South and the USA to the East. It was also an economic grab, basically they wanted to control the Pacific.

It actually remains easily the most large-scale synchronized military offensive in history.

Across NINE time zones.

The legend has it that Pearl was attacked first, but in actual fact the first shots were fired against British positions in Malaya on the other side of the international date line and American commanders in Washington were only just getting wind of that when they discovered Pearl was being attacked as well. A few hours after that, the Japanese socked to the Philippines and Indonesia too. Pearl is painted as being a cowardly, backstabbing attack in the US legend when in fact it was only part of an incredibly audacious, devastatingly surprising co-ordinate large-scale attack totally unprecedented up to not just then, in 1941, but today as well. It sounds crazy, but the Japanese have never really been given the credit for it.

Japan's view was that the sanctions that The USA had put them under would have had their country on it's knees in a few years. This ignores the reason as to why the sanctions where in place in the first place, which was their ongoing war in China and Japan's disgraceful behaviour in South East Asia.

Remember the TV series World at war talking about the massacre at Nanking and saying "Even the Nazis were shocked" , gives you some idea about how vile the Japanese occupation must have been.
