fatrajah
The brewery between Countess Road & John Street was Richdales. "Richdales for Rich Ales" was their motto. The building still stood in the late 1950s but had been abandoned for some years. Edited December 9, 2015 by fatrajah

On the back is Richdales Prize Ales Each Ace suit has its own Beer on the symbol. Hearts says Nut Brown Ale Diamonds, Brunswick Ale Spades, Bitter Beer Clubs, Wellington Beer. They all say John Richdale & Co Ltd, Britannia Brewery, Bramall Lane, Sheffield. I've no idea how old they are, not sure If I can post any pictures of these, it has always fascinated me about the brewery and when it finished trading. stpetre
Here is an old Richdale label, also a tray with the RICHDALES FOR RICH ALES slogan. From what I see on old maps, I think the 'Richdale's' frontage was on Bramall Lane itself (later perhaps a Volkswagen dealer's) and opposite 'Jack Archer's' sports shop? Jack_Russell
Thanks Hillsbro for the pics, I've just found this link which shows some of the beer labels for Richdales http://labology.org.uk/?page_id=5636 These are some of the labels which are on my playing cards, I bet the recipe for these beers has long gone. The brewery is shown in the 1954 Kelly's Directory but it had gone by 1956.
fatrajah
If I remember rightly, by 1959 the Hillsborough Motor Company occupied the corner of the site between Bramall Lane & John Street. The rest of the brewery building was still standing, including the brewery chimney. Edited December 10, 2015 by fatrajah
hillsbro
Hi fatrajah - yes, the 1959 Kelly's Directory shows the "Hillsborough Garage & Motor Co. Ltd." exactly where you place it. Here is a link to another picturesheffield.com photo, an aerial view showing the brewery with its chimney, and the smaller property on the opposite corner of John Street adjacent to the football ground. fatrajah
Hi hillsbro, thanks for posting the photo. I'm trying to remember what the building on the opposite corner was. I remember it as just being a high wall with some kind of business behind it. I think the former Richdales buildings stood for quite some time after 1959.
