Campaign grows to switch the building of HS2 station to Sheffield city

Recommended Posts

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet. But SCC weren't the main reason why the route got moved to the city centre instead of Meadowhall. It was the fact it was ONE BILLION POUNDS CHEAPER to do so.

If SCC hadn't campaigned against the Meadowhall station, would HS2 have changed the plans??

The route HASN'T been moved to the city centre. The route will entirely bypass Sheffield now and a spur line using existing rail will run to Sheffield.

It does run to Chesterfield though which is where it spurs off. There's also no change so you will remain on the newer trains.

Chesterfields obviously not very far away so I doubt it will have a massive difference on the journey time and will also increase the capacity.

Chesterfield only really serves the south of the city and is no good for the rest of the City region..as to capacity.. Meadowhall was far superior.

Good for people in Chesterfield if it stops there I'd have thought! The great train station robbery!!!

You can use that Derbyshire Times if you want.

The briefing given to MPs by the Chairman of HS2 just before the weekend stated that was NOT the issue:

To quote: "At the HS2 MP's briefing meeting last night, the Chairman of HS2 said the reason they are not in favour of the Sheffield Meadowhall station was the lack of backing by Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce..."

In a nutshell. SCC looking after themselves rather than South Yorkshire as a whole. Are SCC responsible for the numerous changes to the approaching road at midland station over the past few years???? They're gonna have to make alterations again to prepare for HS2.

It also needs pointing out that although a parkway station has been 'planned in' for somewhere in SY, it's not guaranteed they'll get one. Hence why Doncaster council are up in arms.

Except that instead of 3 trains an hour stopping at Meadowhell, requiring a change and a 5 minute journey into Sheffield, now there will be 1 train an hour, reducing to mainline speeds at Chesterfield (so 10 minutes away) but requiring no change.

So by comparison that capacity is significantly less than the original plan.

Most business travellers wouldn't have even changed trains at MH, they'd have simply jumped into a taxi - which as it happens they'll also do at Midland Station.

So much shortsightedness from SCC and Sheffield commerce group.
