Westie1889
Quote A huge mind bending amount of money but as the previous post said it's about capacity not speed. The current network is close to full capacity so if we want to cater for the projected increase in rail freight and passenger traffic in the coming years we need to build something. Environmentally we need to get vehicles off the road, economically we need faster more reliable connections between our major cities so it will be interesting what they decide to replace it with if its cancelled as they can't just do nothing. Regional rail links could and should be improved but that doesn't solve the freight issue nationally or connectivity between the regions. A difficult problem to solve. The question I think will end up in a public enquiry will be, was this the best way to increase capacity. I feel the answer is going to be a no. Political meddling and utterly ****-poor management have turned this into a total farce. Edited January 21, 2020 by geared
Janus
What will it take for the government to say "we have made a major error of judgement" and pull the plug on this

They have new constituencies full of luddites who don't want it, but its still a Tory flagship policy and there are some Tory constituencies and supporters who this will benefit. It very much depends if they can keep costs under control. If it continues to spiral out of control all they're doing is making a huge millstone to hang round their necks for the coming decades. The costs will far outweigh the benefits if we start counting in hundreds of billions.

El Cid
Boris Johnson has appeared to confirm that HS2 rail will go ahead – in an interview with a 10-year-old boy. The Prime Minister told Braydon Brent, a reporter for Sky News’s children’s show FYI, that “the only thing to do is keep digging” despite the “hopeless” costs of the troubled railway line. https://inews.co.uk/news/boris-johnson-hs2-go-ahead-official-review-1382287?utm_source=fb&utm_medium=fb&utm_campaign=ijp&fbclid=IwAR1JDTnIQF_1rTBFpmfZX3MuiXOek5HPDalIYmXyVMNcvifMI7unWtxEKL8
