geared
Due to cost worries over HS2, we might not even get the Meadowhall station. We're not doing an amazing job of coming across as a friendly, uncomplicated place to put a station though are we??

Cyclone
I would assume such a spur would come off the 'main' HS2 somewhere near Sheffield (without looking I don't know the route so not sure where that would be). presumably there could also be a northbound spur forming a triangle to allow high speed services from Sheffield to north-east/scotland, probably a bit overkill while the line only goes to Leeds though I still maintain anything other than a city-centre (ideally midland station) stop for Sheffield defeats the purpose of HS2 as far as Sheffield is concerned and is frankly an insult to the city Because connections to Meadowhall are so infrequent and take so long
Guest busdriver1
Yes because HS2 is all about Sheffield isnt it? The rest of South Yorkshire doesnt matter. To Some.
SteelCityAle
Because connections to Meadowhall are so infrequent and take so long quite possibly enough to negate the benefits of HS2 over the MML! As a rule, people don't want to change trains. It makes Sheffield a less attractive proposition than other cities if you have to faff about rather than getting straight to the centre

The saving from Leeds to London is supposed to be 0:52, so we can expect the Sheffield saving to be in the region of 40 minutes. So at the worse case, waiting 10 minutes at Meadowhall and then a 5 minute transfer, you're still 25 minutes better off. And of course for the many people who Sheffield isn't the closest station it makes more sense. Meadowhall has extensive parking for example, unlike Sheffield where it costs £14/day. Meadowhall is half way between Rotherham and Sheffield, etc, etc... ---------- Post added 17-05-2016 at 11:48 ---------- Oh come on, you cant expect HS2 to connect in to every settlement. Nobody suggested that. The point is that the station near Sheffield will serve the entirety of S Yorks, not ONLY Sheffield city centre.

In terms of Sheffield (and yes other South Yorkshire people) going FROM here TO London you can argue that any of the proposed sites is as convenient as the others. In terms of bringing investment FROM outside TO Sheffield you need a city centre stop. Like I say, it's not just about the time saving in itself, people would rather catch a direct fast train to Leeds than connect to some rusty bus on rails to get into Sheffield

Well yes but its going to be sited as conveniently for Sheffield as possible, given its the largeest settlement of the 4 in South Yorkshire, plus there are other parts of the "Sheffield City Region" that dont fall in South Yorkshire. They'd almost certainly be getting a taxi from Leeds station to their destination.
