Chez2
Yea apparently their figures are way off the mark and we get nearly half of the 350 back in rebates and such. It's just as bad as the figures doing the rounds for the Scottish Referendum, it beggars belief they are allowed to promote such mis-truths. A little off topic but a reply to the quoted article: Look on .Gov website at all the funding announcements. There are lots articles on EU funding for all sizes of business, R&D, Science, Farmers, etc, etc. We tweet a lot out that apply to our industry. The EU makes things easier eg consistent regulations for chemicals (which include household cleaning products), working time directive, minimum wage etc. I have to work with the difference between dealing within and outside the EU as part of my/our business. A lot of people are unaware of the implications so can't make an informed choice.

No doubt they'll be scores of public inquiries after to look at why it cost so much, keep everyone in Whitehall busy wasting yet more money on the blindingly obvious. It is scary that some folks think they are the only one in the loop.
Chez2
It's a scary thought that despite not knowing the facts or the implications of leaving the EU people are still more happy to vote out. I know. We were discussing it at the Policy and External Affairs Committee over two months ago. Quite a few people were unaware of where to look for information on which to base their decision. There are several websites where lots of information is readily available on legislation in the EU, how it affects businesses and employees, funding etc. Even well educated people often don't look and are going to vote on emotion rather than based on facts. I can't believe the number of people saying "we survived before the EU". What sort of statement is that? What is that supposed to mean?
Cyclone
We had 2 world wars before the EU as well. A large part of the reason for integration was to avoid that happening again!

darylslinn
One thing not really covered in this thread though is the actually routes in and out of Sheffield / Meadowhall. The Meadowhall Station and route in and out are well documented but what about the route in and out of Sheffield ? The existing route from Chesterfield towards Sheffield Victoria is currently used by freight trains and others avoiding Sheffield (Old Road). The line that joins from Sheffield Midland through to Woodhouse Junction (Worksop) is also currently used by passenger trains and the occasional freight and again is not suitable for HS2... so how does the line get in to Victoria and then again North out to Leeds ? Jeffrey Shaw
Good post. PLUS SCC are now worrying anybody who's buying a property anywhere in Sheffield- because they show 'HS2' warning entries on every set of replies to the standard CON29R Enquiries of Local Authority. Yes, even if the property's in Fulwood or Ringinglow!

The lack of information about the route in and out, its cost and damage, has always been a weakness in this stupid idea of having the station in the city "centre" That and having the station even further away from the main part of the city centre than it currently is
