Campaign grows to switch the building of HS2 station to Sheffield city

Recommended Posts

One thing not really covered in this thread though is the actually routes in and out of Sheffield / Meadowhall.

The Meadowhall Station and route in and out are well documented but what about the route in and out of Sheffield ?

The existing route from Chesterfield towards Sheffield Victoria is currently used by freight trains and others avoiding Sheffield (Old Road).

The line that joins from Sheffield Midland through to Woodhouse Junction (Worksop) is also currently used by passenger trains and the occasional freight and again is not suitable for HS2... so how does the line get in to Victoria and then again North out to Leeds ?

The original Arup report from 2013 gives some indications...

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/hs2-phase-two-engineering-options-report-west-midlands-to-leeds

Specifically a map on page 228 shows several route options investigated at a very conceptual stage, including one up he Moss Valley !

The Victoria Loop is shown from page 132 onwards.

My preferred option would have been a high level station to the east of Midland Station, heading south via a tunnel under Meersbrook, Norton and Dronfield popping out somewhere to tie into the current planned route near Staveley. And to the north, via a viaduct over Park Square and then diving down under Burngreave to pop out somewhere near M1 J35. Expensive yes, right solution though.

Good post.

PLUS SCC are now worrying anybody who's buying a property anywhere in Sheffield- because they show 'HS2' warning entries on every set of replies to the standard CON29R Enquiries of Local Authority. Yes, even if the property's in Fulwood or Ringinglow!

Well of course this works 2 ways. If you are a housing developer you might not want to build new homes where any HS2 route might run. Which might be holding back several potential new housing schemes. But if you are looking at business and access to HS2 you might be put off by the doubt and just invest somewhere where you know the route will go. So even businesses that were looking at moving from the city centre to Meadowhall might be tempted to invest in Leeds, Derby or Manchester where they know the route will pass.

Except faced with the choice of:

A: Doing all of that, spending billions in the process

or

B: Sacking off the entire line to Leeds completely

Clearly B is going to be the winner here.

If it doesn't make financial sense it's not going to happen.

They are already spending billions...

They are, but don't forget the Birmingham->Leeds line isn't set in stone yet.

If our city start making demands for huge tunnels and such to accommodate the station in the centre of the city the people in charge of HS2 are going to see the projected costs for the line shoot through the roof and just cancel the entire section.

London Birmingham is going ahead

Birmingham Manchester is very likely

If Birmingham Leeds is going to be big money it's got no chance.

If it goes ahead, a better option (and probably a bit cheaper) would be to reach Leeds via Manchester, ignoring Sheffield completely. Almost as soon as the planned line hits South Yorkshire, it runs over old colliery workings. An engineer at Sheffield Council had said that the approach to Meadowhall from London passes over badly faulted grounds. The current line from Leeds to Sheffield is also undermined and this restricts speed.

But if they built London to Birmingham. Then Birmingham to Manchester and Liverpool. Then Joined upLiverpool/Manchester to Leeds/Bradford. Isn't that really the Northern Powerhouse?
