Campaign grows to switch the building of HS2 station to Sheffield city

Recommended Posts

I thought Victoria station was very much still on the cards??

No 'official' statement has actually been made yet, thats in a few days isn't it?

If it is still on the cards, the train coming in from Chesterfield via Renishaw/Darnall would be the far more sensible option that via Totley/Dronfield, given the layout of the lines plus capacity.

Unfortunately your attempt to credit 'Sheffield council' fails on the simple fact that this NAO report was instigated as a cost cutting exercise. There is no mention of routes, frequency or location which will be left to Sir David Higgins' report which will make a recommendation about the location of the Sheffield station later in summer 2016.

And Sheffield council have not been lobbying?

and then come into Sheffield on the traditional lines, and one assumes into a new dedicated station.

Nope, if the rumoured plans are correct, it will serve Sheffield Midland. Whether that means on a dedicated upper level or on the existing level is anyones guess. Should it be the latter, Plaforms 2/5/8 are just long enough to hold a 200m HS2 'compatible' unit.

These shorter 200m units would likely end up only forming Euston - Sheffield terminating services though. The full length 400m dedicated units (like those that would have served Meadowhall - and will serve Leeds) wouldn't fit within the footprint of Midland Station.

So the Sheffield region loses its link to any future stations further north on HS2 (without having to first go south and change).

Smashing(!)

Yep. Youve got to admire how SCC cuts off its own nose to spite its face as well as mucking up everyone else in the region. And the extra jobs claim never held water, there was as much chance at Meadowhall

Also is there actually the capacity to run any more trains between Sheffield and Chesterfield via the Totley Tunnel?

Every hour currently you have (usually)

- 2 x Cross Country (to Birmingham and beyond)

- 2 x EMT (to London)

- 1 x EMT (to Nottingham/Norwich)

- 1 x Northern (to Nottingham)

..plus freight, plus the trains using the first part of the line between Sheffield station and Dore station (3 an hour there plus freight)

Sheffield isnt going to get any more than one train an hour, is it?

The north throat of Sheffield station has much less capacity than the south.

Running the HS2 tracks from Nunnery into a two track station near the tram tracks would be a very difficult but possible

I was assuming a Victoria station for the train going via Darnall/Woodhouse though. Apparently that isn't happening anyway.

If Sheffield ends up with terminating services, it would probably be half hourly and I'd put my money on the EMT St Pancras services being canned to make room with EMT offering regional connectivity to Derby, Leicester, Kettering etc via a change from HS2 to MML at the East Midlands Hub.

It sounds to me the high speed line to Leeds will be built as planned but a few trains will divert off onto the classic network to take a diversionary loop serving the existing Sheffield station.

With Meadowhall we would have got a frequent high speed service, big car park easily accessible from the M1 and upgraded bus, tram and local train connections. Now we're getting a City Centre station with none of those.
