Campaign grows to switch the building of HS2 station to Sheffield city

Recommended Posts

Nice way of putting it......major work required at Mexborough....a better way would to be honest and say the blighting , destruction and loss of the homes of hundreds of people .

Your appear to be mixing two very different plans associated with two totally different projects, with two totally different timescales and two totally different funding and legal backgrounds.

So different one route already exists and would require only minor planning permission, if any. The other is a totally new route requiring an Act of Parliament.

So different that they would run at 90 degrees to each other.

Electrification of the railway line between London and Sheffield is going to happen. It is delayed and may loose its priority but it will be done.

Another plan with less certainty of time scale is the "electric spine" which is to complete electrifying for freight of the route between Southampton and York- this would require wires from Sheffield via Swinton and Pontefract.

This leaves a short bit from Swinton to Doncaster through Mexborough.

Although suggested it is logical. Best guess at the moment for this section is 2024.

None of the above has anything to do with HS2. No northward extension of HS2 from Sheffield(Midland) is planned.

Much of the work is required for other projects - which is why it's saving HS2 so much so while it might be delayed and pushed into other projects. I don't think it'll be axed completely.

For instance:

The station remodelling is required for MML electrification.

The spur is required for faster trains to Leeds and Manchester

The spur will be in the other direction to Manchester and Leeds, so why would it be required?

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got a letter through my door from HS2 listing all the consultation events for the new proposed routes. The Sheffield event will be in.... Aston. Best Western Plus Aston Hall Hotel to be precise, on 8th Feb.

I'm sure they'll be positively inundated by Sheffielders eager to have their legally required say on HS2 at that most central of locations.

For comparison, both Leeds and Manchester have consultation events in their city centres.

Does it matter?

Also, isn't the majority of the HS2 affected areas located in that side of the city anyway. Probably makes sense to have a venue closest to those who are likely to attend.

There are other locations for Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Chesterfield residents to have their say, including one in Mexborough. This one is supposed to be for Sheffield residents to talk about the plan to route a side route through the centre of Sheffield. Does sticking Sheffield's out in one of the more remote areas rather than in the City Centre where the maximum number of people could be reached make sense to you?

And yes it does matter. Consultations are a legal requirement, the only chance the public get to have a say where the Government is supposed to listen.

The whole point is, it was about siting a station for the Sheffield REGION. In case you are confused that also includes Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham.

Cheers. not:loopy:

Absolutely correct BD1 , it is supposed to be for the SCR , in which case Meadowhall is the site that the whole of the city region (those that support Hs2 that is ) support , even Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Transport forum agreed that in `2013 .

Questions need to be asked of Sheffield City Council , how they managed to blow £190k of public money to move High Speed Rail away from Sheffield needs to be investigated , in my view it is either complete incompetence or if not perhaps an unseen agenda .

They claim the city centre station is the promised land , they are championing this as a victory for Sheffield , in truth they have bought a lose/lose situation , massive disruption and yet not High Speed , nor is it capable of providing the capacity needed to boost the economy to achieve the £5.3 Billion fantasy figure they are claiming , all they have achieved is a 20th century slow speed branch line , effectively cutting Sheffield out of the UK's premier infrastructure project for the 21st Century .

Sheffield is a loser , South Yorkshire is a loser , but Leeds can't believe their luck...quicker to travel from London to Leeds than London to Sheffield despite being many miles closer , for the next half century at least , can anyone really argue that is £190k well spent ?

Sheffield City Council should have read "21st Century Infrastructure for Idiots'' sadly they appear not to have .

He's not on about the station he's on about where the public consultation about the station is to be held. There are many throughout the region.
