unbeliever
I would be saying the same because the environment is far more important than we are. Hopefully people like you will change their stance before the planet can no longer sustain us. We've been managing our environment for thousands of years and our standard of living keeps rising. You sound just as silly as those who argue that the environment doesn't matter at all and we can do whatever we want. It's about balance. There's nuance here. There's a legitimate case to be made that the balance has swung too far in constraining human activity when it comes to waterways. Like it or not there are 7 billion people in the world. Over 60 million of them in the UK. They cannot be properly supported without the willingness to balance ecological with practical matters. Both of those numbers need to come down, but short of an horrific apocalypse, that will take time.

We've been destroying the environment for thousands of years and it's coming home to bite us, destroying more of it isn't going to help anyone in the long term. Throughout most of human history we lived sustainabley and in harmony with the environment, in our more recent history we have been systematically destroying the environment. In the past few years we have started to bring rivers back to life after almost kiling them with polution. In the past few years we have started to bring rivers back to life after almost kiling them with polution. You're kidding right. Firstly what has dredging got to do with pollution. Secondly we have never lived sustainably or in harmony with our environment. Certainly not since we learned to control fire about a hundred thousand years ago or even started making tools about 3 million years ago. Life does not live in harmony with the environment. That's a myth. It expands as much as it can before something stops it. We have the wisdom to sometimes constrain ourselves in our own enlightened self-interest, but that's all it is. Your ideology is built on nonsense and either the inability or refusal to understand the nature of life itself. You're the real threat. Take Oxygen for example. Oxygen is originally a pollutant. Without photosynthetic life disrupting the natural order, the atmosphere would be a mixture of CO2 and Nitrogen. Life showed up and started using solar power to harvest Carbon from the atmosphere for its own ends expelling (at the time) toxic Oxygen into the air. We don't want that kind of radical change to take place now because we're adapted for the world roughly as it is now. The goal is to keep the world roughly the way it is, perhaps even optimise it further to us. We have to be careful that we don't store up unmanageable future problems which would be a threat to us, but we're no danger to life on earth. We couldn't destroy it if we wanted to. Dredging is just another way to damage a rivers eco system. Your post demonstrates your denial that humans are causing damage to the planets ecosystems and living well beyond what is considered sustainable. I live in hope that people like you will educate yourselves before it's too late. Want kind of radical change don't you want? It's unlikely that we could destroy all life but we are more than capable of making earth unsuitable for our own existence. unbeliever
How sustainable is that computer you are using to post this? You misunderstand. You're talking to a radical environmentalist. Other people have to change. They can do whatever they choose because it all ultimately supports their efforts to "educate" us.

carlbadboy
How sustainable is that computer you are using to post this? That rather depends on the size of the population, the smaller the population is the more sustainable it is, right now because of the population size it's an unsustainable luxury.
