Corbyn offers to do a televised debate with Cameron

Recommended Posts

They dont have to have fully developed policies per se as they are in opposition. They will wait for conference before geting some rough policies together and final policies wont be formed till a few years before the general election. the only one that sticks out at the moment is some uniformity on Trident.

So not much point debating them then.

Well in terms of an oppositions policies, then no, not if they dont exist. They can have a position on something, but policies are about what you would do in government and manifestos arent fully developed until a few years before an election. Theres nothing to stop them announcing policies beforehand if they wish, ut they tend to leave it till later.

You can debate government policy because as they are in power they have to do something, but the oppositions lot is just to scrutinise.

The opposition doesn't debate government policy as a matter of policy, they just oppose regardless. That in itself defines the opposition's policy, right up until they find themselves in power and having to get to grips with the real world.

Not really. You are still debating policy by calling it into question. Saying it defines the oppositions policy is rather simplistic, but if they have a policy or develop one, then they need to be consistent at least the one they put into the manifesto. Agreee that its easy to criticise whilst in opposition and tougher to have to put policies into action when in government. Same for both sides, its just politics.

Of course it is simplistic. That's the point. It's up to the opposition to develop something less simplistic than opposition for the sake of it. They don't seem able.

Why thankyou Arthur, you've just espoused one of Corbyn's main aims if he gets into Parliament, which is to judge all proposals on merit, and not just oppose them out of hand because they come from the opposition.

So true. The opposition has a critical role and that is to hold the government to account.

'Her Majesty's Most Loyal Opposition'

We've seen what can happen when the opposition fails for extended periods of time. How many times was Blair let off the hook by inept opposition!!!

Corbyn can't even handle different ideas in the Shadow Cabinet.

Corbyn is in Parliament. He's been there for 3 decades. It doesn't really sound like he can tolerate differences of opinion as he is about to remove those who don't agree with him from the shadow cabinet.
