TORONTONY
Thank you Mr.H. and I meant 1974 (not 1964) but I messed the Boxing Day thing up. I actually think you were right about both i964 and Christmas day being a work day in Scotland prior to then.. I started work in 1961 and I can only recall my first couple of years where I had to work New Years day, and a Scotsman,my age,who I have known for 30 years says he remembers working Christmas in his early days and having New Years off. beechnut
It was definitely 1974 when New Year's Day became a bank holiday in England (also Northern Ireland and Wales). See here (scroll down to the table):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_the_United_Kingdom. Also in 1974 Boxing Day became a bank holiday in Scotland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_and_bank_holidays_in_Scotland. Before 1974 Christmas Day was a bank holiday in Scotland, though of course some people worked Christmas Day, just as they do now.

I married in 1967 and don't remember working any New Years during that marriage, which ended in 1974. Maybe that was one of the MANY things I tried to forget about that marriage LOL
Kidorry
I am with you on that TT.I married in 66 and I cannot remember working a New Years day, still I could be wrong.I think the works could have been having a holiday before it was made an official bank holiday. Jim Hardie
When New Year's Day became a bank holiday in England and Wales, Scotland got an extra day. So they now have two days to get over Hogmany. I'm not sure if they get any more days in total though.
hillsbro
...I think the works could have been having a holiday before it was made an official bank holiday.Quite right - and the converse was also true; I worked for a bank but didn't get New Year's Day off until 1974. One problem was getting to work as there weren't many buses!

stpetre
I seem to remember post being delivered onChristmas day as a child, or is my 70 year old mind playing tricks?? yes Scousemouse, I remember the 'postperson' bringing mail on Christmas Day until around 1963 or so, and it was the only one delivery, the regular days being two (imagine that ?) Am I right about two deliveries a day?
