peterw
Despite all my many afflictions I dropped off at Sheffield yesterday afternoon, and I’ve just arrived home in Manchester with a collection of 908 shots of Sheffield, in daylight and in dark, and I’ve reached the conclusion that when it comes to photography Sheffield is a very photogenic city — especially around the Peace Garden at night. It’s also a very modern city, and although some Forumers don’t like certain parts of it I have to say that through the eys of an amateur photographer some modern buildings are architecturally beautiful. I also took one picture on Norfolk Street for sentimental reasons. It’s now a herbalist shop, but in my day it was a shop where children could get paint boxes for school. What I cannot remember is its name. Was it Windsor and Newton, or Newtson and Windsor. Does anyone know? I also took a shot of Glossop Road Baths for the same sentimental reason. Tony
It was Hibberts. Newton & Windsor make artist supplies - sold by Hibberts.
peterw
Thanks Tony — from another source I’ve discovered that the shop actually displayed Newton & Windsor. Never knew it as Hibberts, but I’m going back now to before the second world war.
rubydazzler
We used to call it The Art Shop in the 50s but AFAIK even then it was really called Hibberts. When they left there I think the owner opened a new Hibberts in Bakewell or Baslow, not sure if it's still here.
