cgksheff
Sad to hear about the tourist killed by the "ride-on" elephant that turned on his mahout in Koh Samui. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/gareth-crowe-british-tourist-trampled-and-gored-to-death-by-elephant-in-front-of-teenage-daughter-in-a6847831.html Don't let it stop anyone going, but be careful out there. blake
This is a new development. I've heard of tourists being mauled by Thai Tigers before - that's happened a few times - but never by elephants. They're the Thai national animal. The Thais get so many farang tourists these days it's hardly surprising fatigue has set in and that sometimes some of them can react unexpectedly. Cyclone
8 massages hey you dirty dawg. Ha ha. Only kidding. I think perhaps your innocence to circumstances may have stopped you seeing certain aspects. Either way we are going away from the point, I was merely reporting on what I'd been told. It doesn't make anyone a bad person or a sex cretin for going to these places, nor does it make the places any less nicer to visit. Air conditioning as you say is a must, if you don't have it, you will be finding a new hotel the following day. The reason we're discussing this at all is someone said "avoid Phuket it's full of prostitutes and drugs". Which seems like ridiculous advice to me. It's one of the most popular tourist destinations. Which seems like ridiculous advice to me. It's one of the most popular tourist destinations. Apologies, I didn't see anyone advise to avoid Phuket because of drugs or prositutes. Or even to avoid Phuket at all. Perhaps you could point it out to me as I still can't see it? Much obliged.
Cyclone
By all accounts Phuket has a lot of prostituition, so we have avoided there. Kho Lanta was a fantastic island, many things to do, good food and a decent enough sized island. My mistake. It was you, but you didn't say to avoid it, just that you HAD avoided it. On the other hand, I went there. Yet you've spent the last several pages telling me that I was wrong, despite you NOT having been there, and me actually having been there... Funny that. Herbalife
Wow bamboo island looks so nice I will defonately be visiting that Xx ---------- Post added 02-02-2016 at 18:33 ---------- Ahh I'm really saddened to see the death caused by the elephant after reading the article and the comments it's really made me think twice about the elephant ride. Seeing the Tigers too but I feel that these have been some of the major events I wanted to do whilst in thiland. Ride on a elephant and see tigers feed the monkeys etc. I can't help but feeling that the negatives seem to out weigh the positives I'm frightened I might get drugs planted on me and I'll never see the kids again I just don't know Xx

They are the places that I have sat and pondered about for hours. I'm just asking for advice I thought that was what this forum was for? We went to Koh Samui 2 yrs ago and moved around, we booked a hotel before we went for the first few days then sorted the rest when we got there by physically looking at the places we had researched online. We then found it easier to use booking.com to book especially when there was the language barrier. I'm sure you will have a great time and you'll find the total holiday cost will be much cheaper doing it the way you are.

And given the number of elephant rides and deaths that occur, you're more likely to die in a car crash on the way to the airport... Just keep things in perspective. I had an elephant ride whilst I was there. Was okay, wouldn't bother again, but I guess that's easy to say when you've tried it already.
cytine
Another thing to check out is the weather. The best time to go is Nov - Jan/Feb, it's still very hot but not as humid and you should avoid the monsoon rains then. Another tip we was given is to ask one of the hotel staff to write the hotel name and address in Thai and if you are going to a particular destination get the name in Thai and English. Not many taxi drivers speak English especially in Bangkok and agree a price before getting in. We found this useful. Whatever you decide you'll have a fabulous time and leave with some wonderful memories. Enjoy it. Edited February 3, 2016 by cytine
