Anna B
Probably the single biggest thing everyone can do to reduce their chances of having mental health problems is to significantly increase their physical activity and eat a much healthier diet consists of 10 portions of fruit and veg a day. ---------- Post added 17-02-2016 at 10:56 ---------- Smoking, drug use and alcohol consumption and stress are also linked to mental heath issues. Stopping all three and avoid stress will reduce your chances of having mental health issues. It appears that an healthy stress free life is the best way to cut mental health issues and it doesn't cost anything. I agree a healthy lifestyle helps, but stress free? How do you achieve that? Unfortunately most people don't have a choice, sometimes stress is simply part of their lives. Trying to manage without enough money, debt, poor housing, relationship problems, job stress; the list is endless. These all impact on children in the family even if you try to shield them from them. They also have problems of their own.
Ted Heath
So you didn't read the report I linked by the Kings Fund? Yes, and I do not see where anything I have written is fundamentally at variance with it.

I doubt there will be many people in the UK that don't have enough money to live an healthy life style.
Anna B
Maybe there is the problem. Stress is normal so don't make it out to be a big deal. Just normalise it. Some stress is normal, but it shouldn't be excessive. For some people it is a big deal. Enormous. It's the reason for their depression. You can't just say 'get over it' and expect it to work. That's basically what's happening at the moment, and why the suicide rate has rocketed. Edited February 17, 2016 by Anna B
Ted Heath
Personally I think people have too much time on their hands, they get bored then morbid leading to depression. I work as a volunteer, go to the gym, read, socialise as much as possible. I believe I have a predisposition to depression and was, once some years ago offered medication. By keeping active and engaged I believe I remain mentally well. Thank goodness I did not get into the spiral of medication. I write from my own experience, I fully accept that anyone unfortunate to suffer from manic depression or schizophrenia falls outside my experience.
