Is There A Place For Feminism In The Modern World?

Recommended Posts

Don't worry, he won't reply. The most vocal supporters of other cultures suddenly go quiet when they have to give their opinions on these cultures viewpoints on equality (along with homosexuality and religious freedom).

Conversely it could be said that critics of other cultures aren't so much interested in gender inequality, or human rights in general; unless it provides them an opportunity to take a swipe at religions or cultures they don't like.

You really think the average Muslim or Roma guy is more sexist than the average white Brit?

Where's the Muslim porn industry then?

Many many people, women included, would argue that the existence of a regulated porn/adult entertainment industry in which no one is abused or exploited is a sign of a good free society.

Why do so many discussions on this forum degenerate into arab/muslim/roma bashing threads? Often, many of the critics are just deflecting things away from their own prejudices (equality for women). It is one of the biggest disapointments in my lifetime that women are still not paid equal wages for equal work. I started work in the 1960's and fought for equality only to see, today, women still being paid less and young women not being given opportunties and talked about on forums like this as as though they were objects

Only men? not women? I suppose Muslim women are not really allowed to socialise freely are they?!

I know plenty of Muslim women too - many of them are colleagues. They tend not to like going to occasions where alcohol is consumed, other than that they're as sociable as anyone else.

Because many men, rather than accept their own failings, find it easier to blame the 'other'. They need to look down on someone else in order to bolster their own weak self esteem.

I don't know. Would you argue that it is?

Would you claim that the porn industry doesn't exploit and abuse people?

Despite the equal pay act in the 70's women are still paid less skill-for-skill than their male counterparts. So yes, a place for feminism is still as valid today as then, considering nearly 50 yrs have elapsed. It's estimated that a further 118 yrs will elapse before gender equality will be a thing of the past..earnings related that is.

Because SF particularly is a focal point for bigots and racists especially General Discussions. Start a thread on ice cream and I guarantee it will descend into race, gender or homophobia.
