Manlinose
I'm sure I'm not the only one underwhelmed by this - if anyone could explain, preferably in terms that a layman could understand, what exactly has happened, and why this matters, I would be grateful

Quik
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-35546669 This explains it. That explains why its interesting, but not why it matters.

Manlinose
Thanks for that link 999tigger - I think I get what has happened. I know I'm a bit dense where science is concerned, but I still don't get why it matters - the link made all sorts of claims about what "we'll" be able to do, and what "some believe" but it didn't explain how we'll be able to do it or why it matters - but then i' m not sure I'd understand it even if it had

See if they hot the spot ebtter for you theres the reddit thread as well. http://www.sciencealert.com/live-update-big-gravitational-wave-announcement-is-happening-right-now They both point to as did that small article to the confirmation of general relativity as well as a new field of observational astronomy looking at gravitational waves. The bbc don't either apparently.
Allen
Not finding fault, I have no idea why or indeed if it matters myself. The bbc don't either apparently. The BBC apparently thinks it deserves number one spot on their news bulletins. Never mind what happening in the real world. The junior doctors strike and the governments stance was way down the list.
