Anywhere to park around the Royal Hallamshire Hospital?

We go to Chesterfield Hospital. Loads of cheap parking, you never have to wait long to be seen and the whole place is just a million miles better than Sheffield hospitals.

That's fine if you don't need specialist treatment. When I lost the sight in my eye, it was repaired by one of the opthalmic specialists at the RHH. People are referred to that department from outside sheffield, similarly the cardiothoracic specialists at the NGH. Fortunately we can get to both by public transport if necessary.

The Hallamshire car park also serves Jessops and Charles Clifford. When my daughter was in Jessops I mentioned the parking problem to one of the nurses, she said that when Jessops was first being designed a request was made for an underground car park, the council refused because they thought it would make more people use public transport. All they've don is create chaos!

It's sheer hell!

I take my old mom there a few times a year, I usually drop her off, then nip down to upperthorpe, plenty of parking there, then she phones me to come & pick her up after her appointment.

It's not ideal, but it's an idea if possible?

My recollection is that the hospital trusts did indeed receive planning permission for a brand new multi-story car park over 10 years ago but chose not to build it so I don’t think we can pin that on SCC.

I had regular contact with the travel planner who used to work for the hospital trusts, university and the museum in a joint role back then. The organization that made least use of her time was the hospitals.

The role ended and the University chose to employ their own dedicated travel planner and left the hospital trust to its own devices

There will be some spaces for the general public at the new University Multi story Car Park when it opens in the spring as well as 100 dedicated spaces for the children’s hospital over the road.

Durham Rd is just a couple of minute’s walk from the Hallamshire.

So that's why the people from Upperthorpe are complaining that they can't get parked outside there own home. I believe some have been made permit only but they have the privilege of paying for this. What a farce.

So?

If your home does not come with a allocated space or a driveway NOBODY is entitled to park outside their own home.

Its open street parking. Street parking by its very nature means that others can park on it.

If they want a permit scheme to try to stop non residents parking on said street, that costs money to implement and run and they choose to pay for the benefits of that.

Want a house with a guaranteed parking place? Move somewhere else.

This is not a new issue. I suspect that the hospitals and university buildings have been there far longer than many of the residents have lived there. It is very common knowledge that the streets in those areas get extremely busy and parking is at an absolute premium. More multi stories will certainly help ease the burden and it looks like a new one is being built. What more do people expect to happen?

Depends what is meant by Upperthorpe. The road "Upperthorpe" that runs from Commonside down to the baths has loads of room to park above Ashberry Road - it's also the easiest to access the RHH from. If you mean the area "Upperthorpe" - roughly Ashberrry Road down to Infirmary Road centered on the shops on Upperthorpe Road then it is a bit tighter but the only permits I'm aware of are for the bit of Upperthorpe Road along the bottom of the Ponderosa (no houses there) and the bit around the Philadelphian Club at the back of Tesco's.
