Waste land Manor/Intake area

When I was a kid in the 1950s I lived in Woodhouse Rd and used to play on an area of waste ground between Prince of Wales Road and Kilvington Crescent.

Looking at Google maps it must have been in the general area where Queen Mary Road and Fitzherbert Rd are now.

My now very vague memories are of a tip/slag heap possibly with a water filled pit/lagoon.

Can anyone tell me what was in this area pre 1950s please?

Thanks

It's Fitzhubert not Fitzherbert and the slag heap you refer to was on Pit Lane just at the rear of where the Fire Station is now and it did have a small rain water pond at the foot of it.

yes remember the pond quite well -used to go there looking for newts and frogs at dinnertime from Prince Edwards school---bit of a wooded area around pond

there was a spoil heap which seemed quite big to us at that time

Also went to one of the houses which are still there and look at the pig they had in a outbuilding/garage----I think the lads name was Vinny Pye-that would be about1954 ish

would like to see if any maps of the area exist

It was the site of Woodthorpe Colliery, which closed in 1921 following 70 years of production.

I knew Vincent very well he lived in the houses below the fire station and kept pet rats under the floor boards.
