Solitaire
Yes, my religion makes me a better person. Not better than you, or him, or her; but better than me without religion. Exactly this. Hesther, you took the words right out of my mouth S xx
Zamo
I think there are no bad or good religions. There are bad people who take it to the level of extremism, twist it and use it for their own benefit. Every religion aims to make people better, no religion teaches to kill, rape or deprive people of their belongings, honour killings or everything else that is done these days to hurt people. You don't think the religion being followed by members of IS is bad?!? Religion is a man-made product designed to control and manipulate people. When people twist it to get others to do their bidding for their own benefit then that isn't religion being misused... it is religion doing exactly what it was designed to do. Does religion make you a better person? No. It makes you a worse person because you help to perpetuate the use of this destructive form of manipulation and control. You could say the same thing about politics. Not everyone who follows a religious belief ends up in IS, Lord's Resistance Army, UVF, etc. Not everyone interested in politics ends up in the SS, Khmer Rouge, etc.

That is what makes it such a powerful tool for the manipulation and control of people and why it is so often the root cause of good people having questionable views and even doing evil things. And how are politicians any different? Listen to politicians from the USA, for example. I'm asking you to do that as even you wouldn't be able to argue that they're influenced by Islam. Christianity is central to American politics, especially on the right. And the USA has committed enough evil things in its time.
ANGELFIRE1
The world would be better off without any religion whatsoever. Then we could all live in harmony together and be nice to each other. Angel1.

If you look across the Western world you will see a separation of religion from matters of state and life is reasonably tolerant, peaceful and prosperous as a result. Compare that to the Muslim world where their is far more intolerance and dysfunctional hatred induced by a religion that is ingrained in the culture and not just shaping politics but directing it. It is like an debilitating infection. Religion definitely does not make people better... although some religions are obviously far more troublesome than others. Waldo
Interesting chat in the pub last night where our religious friend insisted that religion makes you a better person. I disagree that it makes somebody a better person in any possible way. That said, she did get a round in. What exactly, constitutes a 'better person'?
