alchresearch
Isnt this an oxymoron? Wouldn't you cease to be a good person as soon as you do an evil act. You can't be both good and evil. That's like being a Socialist Tory or a well-dressed Scouser. What if you killed someone who'd abused a child?
Berberis
What if you killed someone who'd abused a child? That would be Murder, which is by far not a good act. The good act would be, if you were certain of the perpetrator, to report them to the police and provide the evidence to help the judiciary convict and punish them. dutch
An atheist who does not believe in religion but starts to believe in the opposite does the same thing as a religious person in the opposite direction Good vs Bad is just an ongoing never-ending pingpong ball game of opinions until you step out of it and become well again. A truly religious person will become atheist as far as our available standard religions are concerned. That same person will also see god in all and everything without giving that a name. It is possible to be atheist and spiritually religious at the same time.

Powerage
No absolutely not convinced if your nice you will always be nice whether religious or not on the other hand religion often seems to attract nasty people who can do horrible things but feel they can justify it due to their religion. You dont need a religion to be nice and helpful personally I think if you need religion to tell you that then your probably not that nice in the first place! hyper
I'm not convinced its about being "nice" or "bad" as such Its more about being relaxed and content with life - understanding its context and perhaps thinking about a future beyond earth. When one is satisfied with life and embraces it positively, this makes that person seem nicer - in their willingness to help, their responses to others, less reasons to get worked up. I'm probably thinking less about those where religion is a core part of their life, more where religion is in life's background and sets a broad context

JFKvsNixon
Isnt this an oxymoron? Wouldn't you cease to be a good person as soon as you do an evil act. You can't be both good and evil. That's like being a Socialist Tory or a well-dressed Scouser. History is full of "normal" people who commit bad deeds with the ultimate aim of helping produce a utopia. Beyond selling a few history books, how we judge them after the event is meaningless compared to how they judge themselves immediately prior or during the event. GhostRiders
Nice to hear something where religion made a person better, although getting an allotment, becoming a father, even getting an allotment or a cat might have had the same effect on him. It's good to hear your friend found out what worked for him. We're still looking for something that shows that religion makes you a better person. Well religion made him a better person, absolutely regardless of whether anything else may have had the same effect it was religion that did it for him. So the answer to your question is yes, religion can make you a better person. If you don't accept that then I would suggest that you started this topic as a means of trolling. Perhaps your question should be can religion provide an exclusive happiness unavailable by any other means?
