PeteMorris
You can never make everyone happy. The government could spend millions on surveys and studies to find out what some peoples opinions are, but this is not perfect and would make more people unhappy at the amount spent! The best we can have is a government that listens. But only apparently listens when they're 'forced' to.
Berberis
There's a subtle difference in voluntarily changing your mind, and being forced to. It just seems to me, that every so often, they'll bring forth something outlandish and hope the outcry isn't enough to back pedal. Thereby sneaking it through on a nod. People don't spontaneously change their minds, there has to be external factors. The government is a public service, so once they gauge the opinion of the population, they can either ignore it or try to address peoples misgivings. Im happy they did the latter, but some are still unhappy. No prizes for guessing the political allegiances of these people. ---------- Post added 21-03-2016 at 16:04 ---------- But only apparently listens when they're 'forced' to. How could they have listened in a way that is not forced in your opinion?

999tigger
They wouldnt be back pedalling on changes if it hadnt been met with opposition of a level they which is hard to ignore. As a plitician you now have to spin it round saying we listen or thats what you were going to do all along.

Like I said earlier: no honesty and they say whatever they believe will get, or keep them in, power.

Maybe discussed it in public first to gauge reaction? So if the gov had a huge majority and were confident of getting the nod for any tinpot idea they dreamed up and bulldozing it through , would you be happy with that? It's only because they have a 'chance' of being outvoted in the house they purport to be 'listening'...

Yes, there is still every chance they will just re-word it at a later date and announce with less of a fanfair. Thats the MP's go to method, no matter what party they are a member of. ---------- Post added 21-03-2016 at 16:35 ---------- Maybe discussed it in public first to gauge reaction? First of all, public consultations cost £millions and do not guarantee the general publics support. Infact many see them as a waste of public money. Hanging the government based on a hypothetical situation isn't work the air it takes to discuss, its pointless and means nothing. So as there is a chance they could be outvoted, that's democracy working and shows that its not a Conservative issue as if they all supported this, you believe they would push it through anyway. 1789a
The "mire" is not of their making, it is the creation of the Labour party, who bankrupted us. I think if you were to undertake a quick check of the facts you would, in fact, discover that the "bankruptcy" was caused by property speculation and "derivatives" leading to massive state bailouts of the largest banks. You appear to have fallen for the perpetual lie of the Conservative Party in general and Geo Osborne in particular- "it's all the fault of the last government". Daily Mail/Express/Sun/Telegraph/Times reader I guess.
