kirbydog
Yes microphones to measure the normal background noise at the moment so they have a decibel level to work to when operating as a supermarket.
scargill
Strange the Coop are looking at the pub and not the closed mini-supermarket site across the road. The Cherry Tree is currently open and operating as a pub isn't it? The one across the road used to be a co-op, size and layout not suitable for modern convenience store. velvet tiger
Just had a survey at the door from some market research company working for the coop. "Enterprise Inn's can't make it work as a pub", "would you use a coop on the site?". This is not a positive development. There is already a thriving local food shop knabs next door. The answer is to fix the pub, not ruin another local shop. Clearly enterprise inn's can't make the pub work because their whole business model is flawed. Were it to be run independently or as a community run pub it would have much more chance of success.
Fudbeer
Much as I agree the Enterprise business model is fundamentally flawed I do thing there is a big question mark over the future of many community pubs. The problem is most people just don't visit pubs like they used too particularly in the week,I can remember the Cherry Tree being really busy "early bar" in the week with people sat round that circular area but doubt you will see that again. sunbird
I'm looking forward to having a local co-op. It is a much better site than the old Colton building. The cherry tree also has off road parking for deliveries. Many senior citizens live in the area and will appreciate a small supermarket nearby. Public transport on Carterknowle road is dire and if you don't drive getting up and down the hill to sainsburys/tesco is difficult for them
buckeroo
Do we really need another generic supermarket? It will kill off the newsagent which is very handy as a Hermes parcel depot and traditional sweetie shop for my daughter (which she walks with me to as part of exercise) and no doubt the Farm Shop too which has a range of local produce and specialist food which will not be available in a supermarket. As we need housing the pub site should be sold for flats, not a shop.
Tess
I do miss having Coltons there, it was much easier than having to traipse down to one of the bigger supermarkets and it was nice to support a local business (as with Rounds and Knabbs). Having a shop there was convenient but not sure if the Cherry Tree is the right location for it. That said, Knabbs and Rounds have cashed in on it and now stock bread/milk etc so you can still get the basics locally.
brogie bear
It's really sad to see people opting for yet another supermarket chain to be built instead of supporting local businesses which are a seconds walk away ie. the farm shop and Rounds News. We are so lucky to have these great shops on our doorstep and I use them everyday. Especially considering there is a bus service which goes from Carterknowle Road to Tesco, there is no need for a Co Op (which I personally find expensive and poor quality). There are many senior citizens that live in the area, and many go to the Cherry Tree as a meeting point to see their friends or even just to be around people and for many it is a part of their daily routine. I think it is important to keep our locals open for this reason. Edited June 16, 2016 by brogie bear

scousemouse
I have many happy memories of the Cherry Tree I was one of the first customers when it opened, my father must have paid for it over the years!!! It was said that the landlords came on a push bike and left in a Rolls, so popular it was!!!
