Old map and photos of Hackenthorpe

Recommended Posts

I've been doing some family history research and I managed to get a hold of these old maps/images through my granddad, figured some people may find them useful:

I remember the pearl button factory.

Its still there, although I'm not sure what they make these days. A short while ago, we were working on the house next door (on Pritchard Pl). I had no idea what the place was at the time but was intrigued by the (apparently discarded) oil drums full of sea shells that were there.

Thanks. Can't believe all the character changed from woods and farms etc.

I still have two of the discarded shells from outside the factory. They make nice soap dishes and they are shiny inside with different colours. They are over fifty years old:)

Here is a link to an old map with modern overlay. Click on the blue dot at the left-hand side of the screen and drag to the left to see a modern aerial view.

Brilliant link, I've been searching for something like that for a while

The button factory is some kind of beauty products manufacturer now, not sure what they're selling exactly

the button factory is still involved with the button trade . I think you have confused it with alan howards which is round the corner and deals in hairdressing supplies

You're right, just looked it up on Google Maps, I've been in the US for over 2 years now so i'll blame it on that..

Here's an old photo of the Hackenthorpe Blacksmiths next to the Post Office, the building is now a Vets:
