El Cid
pay the local council etc. All residents who pay CT pay for the upkeep of the parks. Lots of people doing a run at the same time can cause damage to pathways that are not designed for that purpose. Payments to the council will cover the cost involved in closing the roads or making improvements, not for just using the roads and paths.
Cyclone
A quote from the BBC article: The parish council said in a statement it "cannot and will not stop people from using the parks for exercise and running but when it comes to an organisation with paid directors, fundraisers and sponsors it would be unfair to expect the residents to pay." Got to say I agree with that as charges are imposed on the other street runs and should also happen here. Parkrun site here : http://www.parkrun.org.uk/ Its a PLC and seem to have assets of £351,700, an increase of 60% in the 5 years since have been in business. And yet people don't pay to run and the runs are staffed by volunteers... it's not a for profit organisation charging people to administer a 5k run around the park. ---------- Post added 12-04-2016 at 15:42 ---------- As you say it's interesting..If a company were to use a council run health centre or swimming pool and charged it's customers you'd expect it to have to pay for the facilities..should a park be different? Genuine question.. also if they did stop it then what's to stop their "customers" from running in the park by themselves? Nothing at all I expect. ---------- Post added 12-04-2016 at 15:43 ---------- They have to pay to host it, provide medical assistance, road closures, stewards, etc. The London marathon is also sponsored by a charity and so is the Sheffield half marathon and the Pink run. Registratin fees are paid which go to the company that hosts the event and in turn pay the local council etc. ---------- Post added 12-04-2016 at 15:29 ---------- All residents who pay CT pay for the upkeep of the parks. Lots of people doing a run at the same time can cause damage to pathways that are not designed for that purpose. That's the same residents who get to go and have a run for free, but with parkrun providing them with a route and time keeping? Seems fair. ---------- Post added 12-04-2016 at 15:47 ---------- It appears that the income for parkrun is from sponsorship, the sponsors presumably benefiting from advertising. So given that residents pay for the park, and residents get to run in the park with an event put on by a private company which only makes money through sponsorship, I'd say that's a win for the public health requirements placed on the council. IMO anyway.
foxy lady
Topical article on BBC. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-36014525 A council could become the first in the world to ask Parkrun to pay a fee for use of its park. About 300 adults and children regularly take part in two free timed runs organised by Parkrun UK in Little Stoke Park, near Bristol, on Saturdays. Parkrun's ethos in the 850 runs it organises in 12 countries is for the event to be free and open to everyone. Stoke Gifford Parish Council said it was "unfair" to expect non-running residents to pay for path maintenance. Parkrun UK organisers have warned the Stoke Gifford event, that has attracted 4,083 registered runners, would end if a charge was imposed.
