web1
Can anyone settle an argument? A few years ago I worked around South kirby/elmsall/dearne valley area and I am 99.89% certain there was an archaeologically unearthed Viking site in the area, my pal says I've watched too many documentaries and that I am imagining it, and so far Google has backed him up, but I am sure it was there? Can anyone shed some light, might save me a fruitless drive, cheers.
Blackbeard
All over this area there were Viking settlements, try this thread on the forum http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=470191
web1
Thanks Blackbeard, but I was thinking of an actual place, think it was a field that had an information plaque on it, not a generic question really, I'm sure it was near some crossroads near a spa? *_ash_*
any help? http://www.archaeology.wyjs.org.uk/documents/archaeology/south-elmsall.pdf That was an interesting read. This bit amused me though: (edit, sorry it hasn't copied right) Unfortunately the size of the settlement is not clear from Domesday as Elmsall (it is not clear whether this is Sout h or North Elmsall or both) is listed under the same heading as Sout h Kirkby, Moorthorpe and Frickley. However, we can say that in common with many other West Yorkshire villages they seem to have gone into decline under their new Norman overlords. The combined worth of the four villages was estimated to be £5 in 10 66. In 1086 it was £4 10s 8d. This decline is often ascribed to what later became known as the ‘Harrying of the North’.
