Ramblers to Derbyshire during WW2 and afterwards

Recommended Posts

Does anyone recall the weekend 'ramblers' as we called them who poured out of Sheffield by train at weekends. With few having cars, and even fewer having any petrol it was public transport, cycle and wa to get about, there was little in the way of entertainment available so this was a very popular way of spending some of your weekend.

During that period I lived at leadmill on the river Derwent just outside Hathersage and we had a public footpath that ran right through our mill yard so we saw plenty of' Ramblers' .

Few had cameras in those days but I wondered if anyone just happens to have any picture of the mill? ( unfortunately now demolished ) I have been writing about this time in my life and the history of the mill but have not been able to find any historic society who has any photographic record.

A great shame it has been lost but there were no preservation order around at the time, I believe it dated back to 1636 at least but could have been called Haselford Mill earlier although records are a bit unclear..
