swarfendor437
Just thought I would share with you the content of an email I received from War on Want: "Dear Friend, EU-Camada trade deal CETA (the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) is due to be signed this autumn - by early 2017 MEPs could be voting on CETA in the European Parliament. We have to make sure that CETA doesn't get through. [book your free ticket for Killing Toxic Trade Deals: CETA!] Join us for a free event on CETA with a line-up of outstanding speakers who have all campaigned against this toxic trade deal. Maude Barlow, Chair of the Council of Canadians, will be joined by leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett, Nick Crook Head of International Department at UNISON, and War on Want Executive Director John Hilary to help you understand what CETA is and why we must defeat it. We believe this is such an important and timely event that we wanted to make sure all our supporters around the country have a chance to attend. Much like its 'evil twin' deal TTIP, CETA was negotiated in secret and is both by and for big business. Through CETA, corporations will be able to destroy our most treasured social, health and environmental protections, enforce the locked-in privatisation of our public services, and sue our governments for lost profits in an ISDS 'corporate court' system. And we know that more than 80% of US corporations operating in Europe have offices in Canada - this means that CETA will open the door to US big business suing the governments of Europe, just like TTIP. If you're concerned about TTIP, you need to be concerned at CETA too. We can and must stop this toxic trade deal. Best Wishes, Mark Dearn Senior Trade Campaigner, War on Want" Event is on Monday 16 May, 2016 Great Hall at King's College London. 19:00 to 21:30, Strand London WC2R 2LS. Did War on Want explain how not signing this deal is going to help their cause agains 'the root of all evil'?
the_bloke
Perhaps Natalie Bennett would be better off changing her stance to 'out' rather than 'in' if she doesn't like the trade agreements being proposed in the EU and wants an alternative?
NigelFargate
Perhaps Natalie Bennett would be better off changing her stance to 'out' rather than 'in' if she doesn't like the trade agreements being proposed in the EU and wants an alternative? Good point here. It is probable that most of those opposed to TTIP are also supporters of the 'remain' campaign in the Brexit debate. This is mystifying, because the underlying principle of TTIP, i.e. the removal of non-tariff barriers to international trade, is the same as that of the EU's Single European Market. Both are based on the principle of regulatory regimes in order to create a more level playing field for international trade. The opponents of TTIP tend to emphasise that the deal will give more power to corporations in relation to EU policy. However, corporations (or large business organisations, to give them a less sinister title) are already part of the policy making machinery in Brussels. swarfendor437
Perhaps Natalie Bennett would be better off changing her stance to 'out' rather than 'in' if she doesn't like the trade agreements being proposed in the EU and wants an alternative? Well if anyone can attend, that would be a good point to put to her - it is for such things as TTIP, CETA (and having to pay VAT on goods purchased from US and Canada because they aren't in the EU) that I will be voting with the 'Brexit' crew - just unfortunate that some of the key speakers for 'Brexit' are Tory Numpties! ---------- Post added 11-05-2016 at 20:28 ---------- Good point here.
