banjodeano
I want to engrave a small piece of stone with writing, prob about ten inches square, whats the best thing to use, I have borrowed a cheap engraver, but it's not up to the job, basically only just scratching the surface, and you can't really see it, although it is on a hard slate type of stone, and not sandstone, what am I best using,? A Dremmel,? It's only going to be a one off, so I don't want to spend too much.. Ideas,?

banjodeano
Hammer and chisel? The writing is only going to be small... Perhaps 10/15mm... I don't think it would look tidy... May be my last option Thanks
L00b
Dremel as you suggest, but with a template? Print a paper version of the template, then dremel or cut or drill it out in some reasonably resilient material (wood, plastic or metal sheet) to use as a 'dremelling' guide, then use the dremel through the guide on the stone? Then paint into the dremelled engraving for contrast and clear-varnish for lastability?

It has the extension bit that means you can hang the main body of the tool on a hook and just use the pen like engraver. Let me know if you need it and ill grab it from the garage. banjodeano
Thanks loob.. But the stone is natural and not flat. It's Straight from the ground, with surface bumps, I will be ok freehand, but I need the right tool. alchresearch
I use a generic dremel, works brilliant. I use this type of bit: http://www.dremel-direct.com/acatalog/7105_4_4_mm_Diamond_Wheel_Point.html You can also engrave glass and padlocks (if you're into love locks). Lots of tutorials on Youtube. alchresearch
Something like this, not the Dremel brand: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/135w-variable-speed-rotary-tool-and-163-piece-accessory-set-n54kb?ranMID=40341&ranEAID=je6NUbpObpQ&ranSiteID=je6NUbpObpQ-84lHrd9Va8jz2uZrsc4ozw& http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/130w-variable-speed-rotary-tool-and-119-piece-accessory-set-used-b29ql
Jukes
I use my Dremel to engrave stone. Just buy the cheapest one or look for on eBay and use the Dremel branded bits because the cheap Chinese ones blunt very quickly. Jukes x
