Deal over Turkey joining the EU?

Recommended Posts

Every EU country has a veto and it only takes one of them to block Turkey joining.

Well they can't join until they get out of Cyprus. Then they need to convince Greece. Then they need to convince everyone else.

It seems strange how Europe ignores the Cyprus situation but condemns Russia for its incursion into the Crimea.

But are they being disingenuous? I'm sure I read somewhere that in return for helping to stem the tide of Migrants coming to Europe through Turkey, Cameron has already agreed to Turkish people no longer needing a visa to come to Britain, in other words he has already granted them unrestricted access. Is this right? Does anybody know if this is correct?

I like it when users throw around words like disingenuous and then start a thread based on an untruth. If the OP wanted to check her facts she could have used google instead of starting a thread.

The what she heard bit is about Schengen of which the UK is not part. She could have found this out quite easily.

The Brexit case is falling apart as a lot of it is based on very easily refutable lies such as the one a minister used yesterday about us not having the right to veto Turkey's EU membership.

Cameron has proven during this campaign that he will simply say anything to swing the vote and nobody can ever trust a word that comes from his mouth again. Here is what he had to say about Turkey joining the EU in 2010...

In a speech at the Turkish parliament in Ankara, Mr Cameron said he wanted to "pave the road" for Turkey to join the EU, saying the country was "vital for our economy, vital for our security and vital for our diplomacy".

A European Union without Turkey at its heart was "not stronger but weaker... not more secure but less... not richer but poorer".

Mr Cameron added: "I'm here to make the case for Turkey's membership of the EU. And to fight for it."

And the Visa free deal that the EU will shortly do with Turkey may not give Turkish citizens 'full rights' but make no mistake that it gives them plenty and it will cost us dear. For example they can claim tax credits... thanks to (yes, you guessed it) an EU ruling back in 2014.

No they can't, they get the right to visa free travel, not to visa free work. Sorry to burst your bubble Zamo.

EU states may well be able to veto Turkey's accession to the Union.

But that's this week's rule - what happens when the rules change for expediency due to some unforeseen changed future milieu? The unknown unknowns if you will.

Vote Labour, they will let any one and any number in. As for the Turks, Cameroon did not say, never, more like, well in the future -- -- that's not a categorical no in my book.

Angel1.

Didn't realise we had a general election coming up:huh:

It clearly says they can.

You’re from Turkey

To get Working Tax Credit you need to be lawfully present in the UK and a Turkish national.

You may be able to get Child Tax Credit if you’re either working in the UK or you’re not working because you’re:

retired

pregnant or looking after children

sick or disabled or your partner has died

Perhaps it is being held in reserve as a last resort reason to prevent them from joining the EU.
