Anna B
Because of Trolling, the Government says it wants to 'reclaim the Internet' and clean it up. In other words they want to monitor it, and police it. Now call me cynical, but unpleasant as some trolls can be, I don't think that is the real reason, it's just an excuse. I think the Internet, the last Bastion of free speech, and information that they'd prefer you didn't know, has long been a pain in their backside and has foiled many a government plot/plan with leaks and by raising awareness among the general public. No wonder they want to take back control. The Internet is a powerful mechanism for information and Democracy. It is the People's voice. When the truth is a shifting commodity, and we are being bombarded with propaganda every day, isn't it important to protect it and keep it free. As a commentator said on the news, regulating it would be like having a policeman standing on every street corner eavesdropping on conversations. The net is already trawled for terrorist information etc. Do we really need more regulation?

If people weren't so spiteful, racist, sexist, homophobic and generally awful to others under the cover of anonymity they probably wouldn't have to. Ditto our press. We get the world we deserve. Anna B
How does one Police the Internet its a gobal network? China and Russia seem to manage it. Their internet is restricted. ---------- Post added 27-05-2016 at 00:15 ---------- If people weren't so spiteful, racist, sexist, homophobic and generally awful to others under the cover of anonymity they probably wouldn't have to. Not because of terrorism, drug dealing, arms dealing, identity theft, illegal pornography, rampant copyright infringement etc etc? Trolling? Wow. This commentator, out of interest, I didn't see it, when he said it would be like a policeman on every corner, did he imply it would therefore be impossible? ---------- Post added 27-05-2016 at 00:55 ---------- The government want to control everything. I1L2T3
Its a force for good and bad. We know our government is basically crony capitalist, bordering on being corrupt, and we saw the power of the internet to out that kind of thing a few weeks ago. News outlets and posters on blogs and online forums basically just came out and said it. The beginnings of a shift in perception created in a day. That would have been impossible 20 years ago. No wonder they want to control it.

On the one hand they lobby for smaller government. On the other hand they want to tell people how to live their lives. Neoliberalist fascism!
